I'm not sure but I think Guyver did air here in the 90s?
It possibly did, although it doesn't mean that it really was available to many. The one thing that was big about the Toonami days of anime was especially the time slot... it was right after school. The only other iconic slot than that is Saturday mornings .
As bad as a lot of it is, there is some very good anime out there.
One interesting thing that I've always found is that people tend to lump anime into one category. What makes that a problem, is that anime is
much more diverse than that. Maybe it's because cartoons in America were geared more for kids with the exception of a few that were more adult-themed (Simpsons, Bevis and Butthead, Aeon Flux, etc).
Some of it is good--I've seen a few good cartoons, and I'd imagine that "anime purists" wouldn't call it anime--the Miyazaki stuff.
I don't know why an "anime purist" would consider Miyazaki's work not anime. Maybe you're considering how purists tend to dislike fans that only like the mainstream media, which there are some that tend to rag on those that like the more popular shows.
but the majority of it is piss poor animation and horribly juvenile stories. There is really nothing good about Transformers and all of those lower-rent enime series that we grew up with as kids (not knowing that is, technically, anime).
Sure, not all anime is good and we'd likewise state that not all movies are good.
I noticed that Naruto is on Netflix instant. and one season...52 episodes....52??? WTF? how can those possibly be good? Might as well be grocery store dime romance novels stamped out on a machine by the gross.
Naruto has around 400+ episodes if you consider that the original show has 220 episodes and the newer Shippuden currently has 209 episodes. The thing is, Zin, if you consider the actual story lines that occur during the anime, most of the distinct events are around 20 episodes long. For the example that you gave, you can actually get the different arcs listed with their episode span here:

The longest one was 47 episodes and I believe all others are under 30 a piece.
