"If you dont like it....leave." Thats a great attitude to have. I am glad the rest of the world doesnt have that same attitude. If being a Mod is so stressful and time consuming, why would anyone do it? Talk about not being appreciated, without us, annandtech wouldnt be what it is today. I didnt know that a private company could legally revoke your constitutional rights, but apparently Annandtech can. I think some of the Mods are "power trippy". Thats just my opinion. I know that in my life, if I dont enjoy it, it causes stress in my life, I feel overwhelmed, I quit doing it. And I am kinda pissed that I wasted 10 minutes of my day reading and responding to this meaningless thread! lol

I don't believe that's what's going on here. There's things that are deemed inappropriate, just like any other place in the world. People like to blow things out of proportion and say we have no freedom which is utterly rediculous. There's always to freedom to leave - plain and simple. No one's forcing you to stay here and forcing you to post a certain way - but there are boundaries. Why can't some people understand this?

Some people really have a hard time with this.

If I invite you over to my house, and you start saying things that I don't want you do say - regardless of what those statements are in content - I have the right to kick you out of my house.

Then you've got the intelligence of an eggplant.

On other forums, you can flame Anandtech as much you'd like and they can't stop you. (Well, they can try, but libel is a different issue) But when you're on their property (this BBS) you play by their rules which you agreed to when you signed up.

I hear ya - for some reason they think there's some sort of laws around here giving the users rights to post. It blows my mind when these people bring up their constitutional rights in a conversation like this!

Some of the kiddies around here just don't get it.

This isn't a democracy and the moderators don't owe anybody but Anand an explanation for their actions. If you've been around for any length of time you know damn well what the rules are. The only criticism I have for the mods is that they let this situation fester for way to long before cracking some skull.

Getting back to the original topic, it is true that we are what makes Anandtech - the members (and visitors) who go to the site - whether for the reviews or for the forums, generate the ad revenue that it's based on. Anand isn't funding this whole operation from scratch - the popularity, the people who visit the site helped make it what it is today.

However, what people don't seem to understand, is that as long as he controls it, the mods can do whatever they want (as long as he doesn't fire them ). They can go and delete all the users. Lock all the threads. As long as we are visitors, we are not in a democracy. Of cource, it would be nice if this were, but since we neither pay directly for the site, nor probably won't all boycott this place, there's nothing we can do about it. Live with it, and stop complaining people.

I know this is slightly off topic, but while the mods seem to be congregating around this thread, and someone brought this up earlier in the thread, I don't suppose it would be possible for one of you to address the idea that each moderator should post under a separate name? Is this being considered? Is it possible?

I agree this is far from a democracy, however it is really the only way to run this forum. IN this case democracy doesn't work. I believe it is more akin to a sort of monarchy/dictatorship. We have the king Anand, and his loyal fanatics (not that there is anything wrong with that) almost like a secret service known as the moderators. They are shrouded in mystery but generally do a great job. Finally there would be somehting like a chancelor or prime minister if you'd like. That would be Zuni. WE must remeber after anand he has more power here than even the mods. The elite members are like the aristocracy. They have power becaue of who they, (however unlike real nobles they rose to greatness because of their contributions not their lineage.) Finally we have the rest of the members. WE may not always like or understand what's going on and sometimes even elites question the prudency of actions. Red where are you when you're needed ), however as has been mentioned nothing and i mean nothgin in life is free. Even the lottery is paid for. Sure you may come out ahead but for evevryone person who came out ahead there are millions who came out behind. Basically this place needs moderation. As Winston Churchill said about democracy (can't remeber teh exact quote but you'll catch the meaning) "IT's the worst damm system i've seen. Problem is i haven't seen anything better."

OK, people, one more time: Your right to free speech ENDS when you leave public property. The first amendment states:

<< Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. >>

This only specifically prohibits the government from restricting speech. Nowhere in the Constitution or its amendments are you given the right to infringe on another person's property. If this were a public, government-moderated forum, then your argument might have some merit. But this isn't. This is a (say it with me now) private forum. The people who have payed for it and put their work into have every right to dictate how it is used. You are their guest. With respect to how the forum is run, you have no rights other than those the administrators are willing to give you.

So please, stop arguing that your constitutional rights are being trampled. The only purpose that argument serves is to show that you don't have even a tenuous grasp on the concept.

Thank you, and good night.

i dont know how many people have posted this before, but i just feel like throwing my 2cents in the thread. people are complaining about the mods working for free...isnt this a free country and people can work for what they want to if its their opinion. the mods are probally really good friends with the boss and are doing it as a friend favor thing going on. i havent been here all that long, but i have no reason to complain, the mods are just doing their job. even though this board is moderated the way it is, i still enjoy it...its a good way to pass my time when i should be doing school work thats just my opinion though

Even though I've had 1 or 2 of my thread's locked, I feel that the moderators are doing just a fine job. Keep up the good work.

sysadmin, if it wastes so much of your time, it won't hurt to just make sure that Anandtech is spelled correctly? The logo is just above and to the left of this box I am typing in now...

Dexion:

<< Infact, Hardware sites and hardware forums are one of the few Internet startup businesses that are making a profit. I'm sure Anand is quite happy with all of us posting on this forum despite us neffing and posting so called "useless" posts. >>

AnandTech is about the only one making a profit from it. Sure, Tom's Hardware and Sharkey Extreme are making money, but if you ask around, you'll find out that 99% of these "hardware sites" aren't making a dime.

On the locked thread issue... I think what the moderators need to understand is that some people are just looking for attention, so, they post useless junk to see if someone will respond. It could be that they are having a bad day, are lonely, etc. Is it right? Does it harm anyone else using these forums? I highly doubt it. Is anyone ever really hurt because some pinhead called them a name, or made some political or religious statement that they disagree with? It's only cyberspace, and I would hope that most peoples lives don't revolve around a hardware tech "Off Topic" forum. Judging by some of these off topic discussions, it appears some peoples lives do (sad).

If the moderators want to cut down on the useless posting and neffing, they should start deleting every "useless" or "nef" post. To stop it, they should just get rid of the "Off Topic" forum all together. That may sound stupid, but, "Off Topic" forums only encourage radical/stupid/elitist behavior because some people see it as an "anything goes" area (figuring they can say anything they want and get away with it) and are tempted to push other peoples' buttons. No matter what the moderators do, it will never go away completely. Hopefully, people will get a clue and realize that life doesn't revolve around four walls, a computer screen, and AnandTech forums.

I would like to back up all the people requesting a reason for locked posts. And some basic do's and don't's would be nice.

BTW: Mod you got me to change my sig for the first time in over 15 months .

Mod... on top of this, i would like to make a request. How about a "vacation" for the junior-mod wannabe's.. the ones who go around posting "lock this thread, lock it lock it" .. to me, that's a nef and thread crapping.

Just an example for people:

I posted about the 40% buy.com cut in Hardware and it got locked. I realized it should have been posted in OffTopic, that is why it was locked (wrong forum).

I think it would be nice to have some basic do's and don'ts. I think the Mods, for the most part, are doing a great job, but there are always exceptions. The top message says that this is not a chat room, but the front page calls Off Topic a "Pub" to me that just about says that this forum could be used as such. In My Opinion this place use to be cool to hang around but it seems that within the last couple of weeks it has become too serious to have fun in. There hasn't even been that many reviews lately. If it keeps getting worse I wont like it and I will leave.
