Yah.. You heard me !

This is going to be a long story so if you don't have the time...Well... skip this and do something more fun !

I recently bought a new Enermax 350 W (fan control) PS and was really excited about pluggin' it into my midi tower (no name..) and connect it to my ASUS A7V 133-C MB,Athlon 1133 CPU. I had (still have) an old 250 W (brand unknown) before... So I thought it was time for an power supply upgrade... I was planning on OC'n and I currently have all my PCI's slot's used up..so I was thinking I maybe needed some more power...oh...well

Before installing the PS I had removed the MB and installed a new Alpha 8045 Cooler... So my wire bundle from the case was not connected to the MB... But I didn't take notice of this fact..

So far so good... I unpacked the PS and screwed it onto the case, plugging in all the cables.
Currently in Sweden we have 230V AC voltage... And the red little switch on the back of the PS read 230V... I plugged the power chord into the outlet... And tried to start the computer...nothing happened... I tried to switch the black power switch on the PS.. dead...

Of course the computer (or actually the MB) had problems realizing that I wanted it to start... Cause the case cables were not connected to the MB... So what did I do...Hm... Actually I was beggining to sweat, I was actually having a cold and was not really at my full senses when my frustration began to overwhelm me..

I SWITCHED THE LITTLE RED DEVIL to the 115V (or 110 ?) setting... That was not a very bright Idea !!

Five or 6 six seconds later my new Enermax Power Supply cranked out a large.......... BANG and my right ear (which was some 6-8 inches close to the PS) got some serious workout... :Q

I guess I blowed a pretty decent electrolyte capacitor...(Anyone ? )

I quickly unplugged the power chord and laid down on the floor totally exhausted with a river of sweat on my forehead... (Why do you always get a workout when dealing with computers... Both phsyically and mentally ?)

So... the story could have ended there but it seems like my mistake was more severe than just destroying a brand new PS for 70 $.
The computer would not start when I plugged in my old PS.... A big sigh... Never more any computers was my thought.

Well... Now the day after I have tried my (6 weeks) 1133/266 K7 cpu on another system and it doesn't show a life sign...
I was wondering first if maybe my MB (also 6 weeks old) got the worst blow, but my cpu definitively didn't make it.

So here I stand with a blown out PS (I got lucky I didn't start a fire...), a non-working CPU, and maybe (probably ?) a non-working MB (and memory ?)
Not a good situation... Well I guess that was the BAD part...of the history

If the story contains a good part, maybe the following section could qualify.

I still have all my guaranties/recipes left for all components...

But the problem is, how do I tell my vendor the "correct" version to get replacements for my non-working components...?
One problem is that the PS,MB and CPU each were purchased from different vendors..

I figure if I told them how I (from some totally weird reason, I must have been out of my mind) switched that little red switch I bet they would not care to compensate me..

The PS have no fire or burn marks on it, just some loose component inside...ehm.. It looks really new ! (Shouldn't it ?)
The CPU also look new , with a nail polish remover I took away all ASII... The core is not burnt...
The MB also have no signs of the tragic accident... (It may work I don't know until a new CPU is installed)

I really need to make up stories like "PS not working on deliverance" and "CPU suddenly not working" type...
Cause I don't think the vendor that I bought my PS unit from will be able to replace my CPU... They may at best deliver a new PS...or ?

The CPU and MB was purchased from two different vendors in Sweden.
The PS was purchased from a Internet Shop also in Sweden...
I don't know if vendors act different in US than in Sweden regarding replacement of damaged equipment ?

I really need advice on what actions to be made...

Good work reading this, hope you had some fun !

Hey it's not that bad....err....actually it is...but at least you'll NEVER do it again. That's the only way you really learn

Bummer....I live in the U.S. and one time I flipped the little red switch from 115 to 230. That was neat. Luckily, all it did was fry the floppy power cable and floppy drive. The big cloud of smoke sure made me panic though as I about dove for the wall to unplug it. Ahhh....computers, gotta love them.

When I was working for a PC manufacturer a few years back - a few of us did the little red switch trick - on a suspected faulty PSU, it banged and smoke smoke appeared but the rest of the machine was left fully functional - pretty funny but I would never attempt to do it on my own kit!

I don't know what to say KeillRandor, I guess some people around here would flame you for attempting to get a free replacement of kit damaged by your mistake but I'm going to leave that to your own conscience.

The only thing I can suggest is in future spend a little more time troubleshooting before flicking that red switch!

Whatever you decide to do, good luck.
