This seems to be a growing problem - e-cigs exploding either while charging or being used.

http://cbs12.com/news/cbs12-investi...ers-government-agencies-ignoring-fire-dangers

CBS12 Investigates discovered 15 cases in 2015 involving electronic cigarettes exploding, catching fire, and/or causing serious injuries
Thirteen cases resulted in injuries, of those eight were severe.

Only two months into 2016, we have found several cases.
In Indiana, a semi-truck driver crashes when his e-cig blows up in his face.
In Dallas, a man suffers third degree burns when an e-cig battery catches fire in his pocket.

In New Hampshire, surveillance video shows an e-cigarette explode in a man's pants.

This is going to happen with anything with a small high powered battery, it has nothing to do with it being an e-cig.

I'm super curious to know how many of these are regulated vs how many of them are unregulated. I see some of them exploded while charging, and I'd assume that means they're regulated. I consider mech mods for the most part to be lithium pipe bombs.

Either way, it's just like those knock-off Segways (hoverboards). People buy cheap unregistered Chinese crap and wonder why bad things happen

I dont worry much about this, my wife is a long time e-cig user and we always buy quality gear, I would like to see if all of these injuries were caused by crap from china.

Finally, something positive the cigarette companies can use:

Try Marlboro Menthols! They're Explosive Free!

Lots of crap from China when it comes to electrical stuff like chargers. Worse is you don't always know what you're getting till you buy it. Avoid sites like Amazon or Ebay if you want quality. Even if you are searching for a known brand, there's lot of fakes.

It's always fun to watch youtube teardown videos of some of this chinese stuff though. Some of it is hilariously craptacular.

I don't see anything wrong with it, aside from people getting hurt. Now if only vapers would explode too.

I wonder what kind of device and what manufacturer? There are dozens of different kinds of "e-cigarette" including homemade mods of all different types. I'm no electrical engineer but the unit I use has various kinds of protection circuitry built in (overcharging, etc.)

Exactly the same cause as those exploding 'hoverboards', demand for the product is very high but people don't want to pay for quality. Quality in this case meaning proper batteries, chargers, voltage regulators etc that would actually have a chance at passing safety regulations in the US/Europe. Instead you get dodgy factories in China cranking out shoddy knockoffs that flood onto ebay and unsuspecting people flock to them thinking they've got a bargain.

This sort of thing is a well worn topic in flashlight forums, look up 'fake ultrafire batteries' for an exciting odyssey of discovery that will make you never want to chance buying cheap junk ever again. The bigger issue is a sort of self fulfilling prophecy where the sort of person that researches these things before buying is also the sort of person who wouldn't fall for crappy products in the first place. The unfortunate victims are the type who know nothing about this and go onto ebay and grab the very cheapest thing they can find. I can't blame them since the worst knockoffs also tend to be the ones that do their best to impersonate good ones, the descriptions being full of hyperbolic claims about 'the very highest quality product 100% satisfaction guaranteed 1000s of happy customers' etc. Again if you read that and your BS meter starts to tingle, you're already well enough informed to know to avoid these things. Can't say the same about someone who honestly just wants a cheap ecig without wanting to spend hours reading, they're the prime target for unscrupulous sellers.

I'm sorry I don't want nasty shit blowing in my face.

Oh wait, no I'm not.
I can imagine what you want blowing in your face, sweet-cheeks. I promise, it's good for your skin

Let's ignore the fact that 95% of vapers don't engage in that behavior, and just wish them all dead. YOU ARE AN AWESOME PERSON! DON'T EVER CHANGE!

I didn't wish anyone dead. Reading comprehension is not your strong area huh.

Use a regulated mod, from a regarded maker, and use batteries from known regarded companies. Problem solved. Enough of the unregulated quad Clapton-coiled dripper from some battery from a company no ones heard of firing at 200 watts.

That's too well-written.

"The very high of quality is satisfaction for you! Much of the thousands of happy and cheerful customers offer their thumbs up to it!"

I wonder where this is all headed when battery technology makes another leap ahead in energy per unit volume. A hand grenade also contains a lot of energy in a small volume. If there's a way of releasing that energy quickly, watch the hell out.
Who do you want making it so that you can be sure it won't do that? Definitely the lowest bidder in a country with no regulatory oversight, and so no significant concern for safety. (Which is not to say that people in the US care about the safety of their customers. We've been, and still can be, horrendous dicks too when it comes to selling unsafe products. Threat of punishment is what helps keep a lot of people in line.)
