explorer died.. help!!

everytime i open a folder ... i get an explorer fault and cant open the window

i have reinstalled xp home and downloaded explorer 6.1 again... still no fix

im running outta options here

can you provide us with a screen shot of the error?

are you able to browse the folders using a command prompt?

when you reinstalled, did you just do a repair or did you reformat the drive and start fresh?

What do you mean by explorer 6.1? Internet Explorer 6.1? do you mean IE 6 sp1?

try it with just a new install of XP - cos it might be the Service Pack causing problems

Then try the Service Pack and see if the problem quips up...

i believe he just did a quick reinstall or repair...a reformat would almost definitely get rid of this problem no?....

what error is it exactly? whenever you post a problem here, you have to give all the details....because an explorer fault error can mean anything really...

if anything, try searching the knowledge base of support.microsoft.com.....the site bailed me out numerous times.....well, hope everything turns out ok

no i didnt format... i dont have the full version of xp home
just the recovery disk

and yes.. i installed the newest version of internet explorer.. i was gonna try an earlier version but evidently u cant downgrade...

it seems that anything that is associated with windows explorer i cant access
ie.... folders, control pannel, etc..
the weirdest thing is that my desktop programs that arent in folders .. i can access easily
and yes i have been searching microsoft's support section.. cant find anything


bah.. i guess my only alternative is to buy a copy of xp pro full version .. format and lose 60 gig of stuff

what error do you get when using a command prompt?


As far as I know, you can use a recovery disk to format and instal windows. My roomate was able to do a fresh instal using the recovery disk from his Compaq, but this may vary between manufacturers.

I think you are going to have to reinstall windows.

Can you repartition the drive so that your current "C:" partition is smaller and make a new partition to install XP onto? or make a new partition to copy everthing you want to save with Xcopy?

And with XP, you should be able to do a System Restore from the point right before you installed the update. Might lose SOME files, but some is better than all. Should be able to run it by booting into safe mode. -TAL
