I have actually seen a (nearly) paperless shop. The facility was large, and keeping track of multiple copies of a work order, all potentially different from one another due to notes added, was just not feasible. Everything is accessible by computer terminals all over the place. (And they use Firefox.) All changes are stored at one central location. Nothing gets printed until a shipping label or tag is needed for the physical material that's being stored or shipped.
