Join the forums, spend some time reading. You'll learn a *lot* pretty fast.

One thing to keep in mind is that having a good grinder is more important than having the best machine. And fresh beans (less than a week old) is a must for great espresso.

How much are you looking to spend exactly, and time commitment to learning?

<--- Rancillio Silvia and Mazzer Mini grinder.

If you're lazy, pick up a good super automatic.

I picked up the Saeco Magic Comfort Plus from Costco. One of my favorite purchases ever.

C1000 pwns all esspresso mchines ever. Especially since it costs so friggin much.
But I love it. So easy to use, VERY tasty coffee. It's easy to maintain too, no cleaning tubes or anything, just a few simple things you have to empy and you are done.

Which Espress drinks do you make with it? I'd like to make a good latte with minimal clean up.

How much was it at CostCo? That model seems to retail for $1199 online.

i have a starbucks Barista Athena -- which I got for a very good deal -- and I like it.
Pros: quick heat-up; consistently good espresso even from average quality coffee, suites me well
Cons: very difficult to steam enough milk for two drinks in any timely manner; water tank needs to be refilled constantly, it seems.

I got it for $200 when it was a $300 machine (about 5 years ago)... and I still use it regularly -- with no sign of wearing out.

Before I got the deal I did on the Barista Athena, I was ready to pull the trigger on a Saeco Aroma (in stainless steel) -- which I had read very good things about. I think it's ~$350. If my machine ever dies, this is what I'd probably get.

If you find yourself in a toss-up situation between two machines -- pick the one with the bigger water tank.
My normal routine is: turn machine on, press the shot button to prime the pumps (2oz gone), pack coffee, put into place, [by now the machine is ready], pull a shot (2oz gone), empty grounds, run two more shots of hot water to rinse stuff off (4oz more gone, maybe 6).
So, for a single person -- that's 8+oz of water used up for 1 serving. Doesn't take long at that rate to empty the tank....

You can skimp on features to keep cost down -- but don't skimp on quality. I wouldn't touch a Krups. I'd consider a mid/upper-end Gaggia if they made a machine I could stand looking at (aesthetics) -- but once you get into the decent models, you're up near the price of the Saeco Aroma SS -- which I love the look of.

ps- I actually started off with an old basic Krups when they first came out about 15 years ago (for $100). It served me well, with plenty of abuse for about 10 years until I accidentally left it on and the boiler tank cracked. I ran out to the store and bought the one that looked the same (for $50) -- brought it home, and it sucked. HUGE quality difference between the super basic model of 15 years ago and the (same looking) super basic model of today. The thing must have had 1/3rd the weight and couldn't pump water through lightly packed coffee. I returned it and swore off Krups from that day forward. So it may be that the krups upper end stuff is decent....

One last thing... expect to be on a constant caffeine buzz for your first week or two

I like lattes, but with heavy cream instead of milk. Super bad for you, but sooooo smooth.

I actually bought a cheaper Saeco SuperAutomatic from Costco for $500. They ran out and provided the Magic Comfort Plus instead.

Edit: man, my capitalization sucks.

I have the Exobar Pulser espresso machine and a Mazzer Mini grinder. I love this combo. I never realized how good coffee can be!

It it true that the grinder makes all the difference in the world and the mazzer is argueably the best. There are others that are a little less expensive and should work just about as good. Rancilio Rocky Doserless was next on my shopping list but I opted for the Mazzer because it has an infinite adjustment. Another cheaper but very good espresso machine is the Rancilio Silvia.

My advice to you is to get the best grinder you can afford first (which will still probably put you over budget!) and enjoy coffee while saving for an espresso machine. Spend some time on the Coffee Geeks forums and become an educated consumer

I have a Rancilio Silvia, pressure-modded and PID'd. It is without a doubt the best home machine out there.

I have a Rancilio Rocky doserless grinder as well. Not quite as adjustable as a Mazzer but I pretty much stick to the same blend so its not a big deal.

I have a gaggia machine (not sure which model) which I like very much. The only thing that seems to be needing improvement is its ability to steam 2 drinks worth of milk. Sometimes I have to let it heat up again for the second drink although I generally try to steam the milk for both drinks at once. This usually isnt an issue because I like americanos whereas my wife is the latte drinker. I also have a gaggia grinder which has 30 settings for grind coarseness. You will have to work out how fine a grind you like coupled with how hard you tamp down your espresso to make tasty beverages.

Get whichever one you like. Just make sure you only use filtered water in it.
