It's a much needed going back to their roots, when they had and chased the performance crown at each generation.

This fluff about perf/$ or value is nonsensical when THE BEST or THE FASTEST can command such a premium and also drives brand recognition.

There's no pleasing some people I have learned from reading comments. Fury is a great brand name IMHO.

for old people maybe but not too many will care about their roots. The name is bad and its typical AMD I think. Tacky shroud design, bad name.

It could be bad because people who rage online are called salty etc. The name also does not signify strength, speed or anything like that. Just anger and red.

furies aren't good

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfxdLAVl2tw

Being associated with rage/fury could backfire when they criticize nvidia. They'd just be ragers or salty (pretty easy to be called a rager online if u just disagree). etc .etc...

Fiji XT is better if they could use it. Ares wasn't bad and those gods in mythology beat the titans.

not smart to be going for bad now.

I think just "Radeon XT" would be better? the 9800XT brings me more positive memories than any "Rage"

but if the card is fast, it could be called Rage XL, Rage 128 or whatever and it would still be great

I also like the name. Hopefully the performance is there. I'm not really looking to upgrade my 780 anytime soon but I have been known to make impulse buys.

Arguing over the unconfirmed name of an unannounced product like it actually matters? Really? Unless it is something terribly offensive, which has never happened in my recollection, when has the name of a video card ever convinced someone to buy it? What are you going to argue about next, the box art, or the quality of the Engrish in the PDF manual?

for old people maybe but not too many will care about their roots.

The irony is no one who actually used any Rage products is going to be very nostalgic about them. ATi didn't release anything worth a damn until the original Radeon. The Rage Fury Maxx is one of the finalists for the title of worst supported products released by either ATi/AMD or NVidia. That's one of the main cards that cemented ATi's inability to deliver on promises or code drivers that weren't complete garbage. A reputation that proved deserved and is still in place today, 15 years later.

Who cares what AMD calls this card? The only things that matter are how well it performs, how much it costs, and how good the ergonomics are. AMD hasn't released a highend single gpu card since October 2013. The longer they drag this charade out, the more market share they lose and worse this gets for them. It's time to actually release something AMD. 20 something % market share doesn't afford you the luxury of waiting for the competition to play all their cards first.

Fury is not a good name to market. Rage wasn't really either. Needs to be more neutral because anger is not considered a good thing.

True that, but neither of those imply being timid either!

Poor name choice imo. Titan was great. Zeus wasn't a bad rumor. But fury? Just almost makes it sound like amd is mad and trying to play catchup to the Titan crew (which it is)

Moreover Fury Maxx was a huge fail and that particular card was one of the reason for bad ATI driver reputation (no driver under Win2000 and so many bugs under Win98 that it was ridiculous)

I think it's a good name but I hope they don't "x2", "Pro" and "XT" it in just one generation. Or "Black", "Z" and "X" it for that matter. Just keep it as simple as possible please.

Rage Fury Maxx was launched over 14 years ago...

The name Fury is free and clear now.

It's been 35 years since Ford sold a Pinto. Maybe they should bring the name back for nostalgia purposes...

That would have made sense if AMD was reusing "Rage Fury Maxx", or "Rage Fury".

"Radeon Fury Pro" / "Radeon Fury XT" should be fine.

Only old people remember ATI anyway.

The leak is probably wrong, anyway. :awe:

Fury is an awesome name, I don't know what some of you are smoking. It's strong and independent, and invokes a feeling of excitement. It's funny what causes someone to suddenly become an expert at marketing and psychology.

Oh and I'm sure people buy "Titan" because they really connect with the mundane qualities of being a giant, like being able to help local villagers by gently moving a large boulder that fell into a river, or needing a massive amount of food to sustain oneself.

According to this thread's logic the Titan is an absolute marketing fail. Huge TDP, huge blower card, huge noise, and huge price. With the trend of micro electronics and ever decreasing footprints for devices the Titan is a marketing label straight out of the 90's, utter fail.

I remember seeing Rage Fury Maxx cards on the shelves at Best Buy way back when. I think they were $200 or $300, a lot of money for a video card at the time.

I didn't like the "Zeus" rumor, that gave me more of a Titan copycat vibe, since it's copying the Greek mythology reference. Zeus also didn't have quite the right ring to it on its own, anyways. "Fury" feels more distinct and evocative, to me.

Zeus sounds old. The 90's beat greek gods into the ground. Everything from subpar amplifiers to crappy PC games had Zeus all over them

Fury is okay, but I don't think nostalgia is a good thing to market to when dealing with electronics. Anything I look back on feels old and outdated. Electronics marketing is about being futurist and forward looking.

The last thing AMD needs is to look old when compared to the competition. I think something easy like the Radeon Alpha would work well. If they have the power to back it up, then Alpha is a bold statement.
