External HDD Enclosure with Spin Down?

I want to add an external enclosure to my laptop for a large HD, but haven't been able to find one that can spin down the drive.

Does anyone have any suggested models?

IIRC this is problematic. Either its difficult to setup or causes timeout errors, at least with usb/fw. esata may be different of course. You might want to do a bit of research.

I don't think you'll find that for a laptop. And, it may not be necessary. Just turn off the external drive's power when not needed. That's what I do.

As stated above just get something w/ a power switch, just shut it off when its not in use.

That's not babying the machine. It is no different than turning off the lights when you leave the room.

Actually, all you have to do is pull out the USB plug - end of story - complete spin down.

That doesn't help if he's not in the room. Connected remotely for example.

RTP! I said when he/she leaves the room. Common sense applies because there is no auto spin down external drive available.

I wouldn't recommend that version of the Vantec NexStar. Get the all aluminum and you won't have to worry about any heat issues.

I have two Acomdata 3.5" combo USB2/Firewire aluminum enclosures and they automatically spin down the drives and also go into sleep when my notebook goes into sleep mode. They are the ones that you can buy at your local CompUSA store.

Where does it say that product spins down?

"Smart Power" under specifications implies it spins the drive down. From their website they go into more detail.
