Most of the drive enclosures I have found that are highly rated include fans, can be setup as hot-swapable, etc. etc. but I can't seem to find information if the control board in the enclosure performs spindown of the drive when not in use. I would like this to be a function of the external drive and not something in an OS driver, etc. This drive will be used for backup purposes only and I would rather not have the drive spinning all day for power & wear reasons.
I.e. From reviews I've read: AMS VENUS DS-2316B2BK has a nice internal fan, is very popular, but does not perform ample cooling if the fan goes out -- nor performs automatic spindown of the drive for inactivity.
Can someone confirm and also suggest a quality enclosure that has these features? Thanks! I would rather save some money and put it together myself than buy something from a manufacturer such as Seagate or LaCie, etc.
