Extra flu shots? any benefit?

Got my seasonal Flu shot Sep. 16. Paid $30 bucks for it but I figured its a better deal than missing work while sick. This week my employer is giving away free flu shots.


What are the pros/cons of getting a second seasonal flu shot?

OP: If you get one flu shot, that'll give you the immunity to the strain(s) that were in the shot. If you get a shot to immunize against those same strains, you'll get no benefit.

No, the virus is dead, not weakened. Op will not benefit from extra shot, his immune system has already "seen" the virus and seeing it again won't do him any more good. Skip it for someone who hasn't had one yet, they are running in short supply..

Uh, your Th cells will already have the antibody ready to go from the first shot. No reason to get a second. (Th = T helper cells, they sound the alarm for pathogens.)

I personally never bother to get it as I'm not really prone to catching stuff. I get a cold maybe once a year, and that's about it. *fingers crossed*

i assume all the flu shots countrywide contain the same set of dead virus strains. in this case, no reason to take, your body has already been exposed to all the variations in this years vaccine.

if for some reason different 'batches' of the shot cover different expected mutations, I guess it would help

you could get the flu shot in the opposite arm and then get one in each leg... *just* to be sure you're covered.
it would really suck if they wrongly predicted for the vaccine which flu bugs are gonna hit this winter and rendered all of those appendage shots worthless. :Q

What is REALL silly is that the US government pays more per capita for healthcare than the UK or Germany and covers very few.

So basically, you are paying more in taxes than an Brit and yet you'll still have to pay for the injection.

booster shots have proven effective a further boosting immunity when given with delay after an initial booster. indeed some speculated the H1N1 vaccine might be a 2-3 shot course.

The virus in a flu shot is dead, you can't get the flu from a flu shot (though you can feel sick from the side effects).

You won't piss the flu shot out. The flu shot won't cause the flu. It may cause flu like symptoms, and that's more likely if you get the shot a second time.

B cells make antibodies. Immune memory from a flu vaccine will consist of both B cells and Th cells. Maybe a few CTLs too, with some luck.
