Coupons? Heck yes, raising 4 kids as a single divorced mom coupons were great.

I first discovered Anand Tech about a zillion years ago because there was a blurb in the Wall Street Journal about some teenager who had a Hot Deals Forum - I switched here from MyCoupons when I discovered there was tech talk, too.

I have a neighbor here at the condo I moved into a few months ago who does the extreme thing, and donates it all. I give her all my junk mail and extra newspaper coupons (and help her with her computer). Good for her.

These days I barely use any coupons - I'm diabetic and can't eat most of the junk that has coupons. Not worth the time.

Of course I watch the show. It's fun.

WTF do you do with that much pasta, candy, ketchup, and sports drinks? How do you possibly consume all that? I know that stuff keeps for awhile, but that's ridiculous.
my dad's devoted the entire basement of their house to grocery storage.

when I was still living there, the basement had a play room (that I took over as my bedroom), a workshop where the previous owner had all of his tools, a laundry/bathroom, and a small pantry.

pretty early on, the workshop got utilized for grocery storage... after I moved out was when things really went off the rails, though. he had my old bedroom gutted and installed shelves around the entire room to store groceries on.

I don't know what they'll do if they ever have to sell that house, they turned a perfectly serviceable playroom/third bedroom into this weird walk-in, private grocery store.

they've also got 2 full-sized refrigerators (in addition to the one in the kitchen) and 2 chest freezers for storage.

my mom is a clean freak, thank god, so they don't have to worry about pests/bugs, but it's still kinda gross because my dad is not good about cycling out expired products. the last time I was over there and needed a bottle of ketchup, I ended up going through about 5 expired bottles before I found one that was still good.

i used to work retail at the counter...... it's a total PITA for some people, others are very organized and know the system and it's pretty smooth. it is a very time consuming proccess, and you don't get freedom in what you buy, but you DO get a good deal. Most people have stockpiles of stuff . . . they probably save a lot too, but i haven't been motivated enough to coupon it up. Once in a while i'll do some, but mostly only buy one get one free at tacboell!

There's a subforum for this on slickdeals. Also, CVS and RiteAid for example give the customer in-store "dollars" that they can use to roll savings into.

Also for online contests there's forums dedicated for making bots that auto enter you into the contest and there's a site that will autofill in the captchas for you.

The fuck is wrong with these people? 125 boxes of each variety of pasta? What do they do with this shit?

Donate it?

I've made money back on a few items, usually after rebate deals. I don't go to extremes though. That's just stupid.

I can see manufactures put an end to this soon.

They are starting to. The new barcodes allow for more differentiation among product families, this will take a while to roll out to all the POS systems. This should cut out a LOT of the abuse. P&G puts a limit of 4 like coupons per customer on their coupons. Manufacturers always threaten to not redeem gang cut coupons which is what you get when you buy coupons from the coupon cutter sites. This is pretty easy to get around though by just taking a scissor and randomly trimming all your coupons.

But the truth is that if the manufacturers don't want people to use coupons they won't print them. This is simply an advertising expense for them.

They spend huge amount of hours for what amounts to an incredibly low hourly-pay.

Also have heard that very recently a lot of couponing has been really curtailed because of this kind of crap, so if you've not done it before you're too late to the game.

I have a feeling that the people who do this for the purpose of donating have some psychological issue that makes them addicted to the couponing, and not the philanthropic act. In other words, they are obsessed with extreme couponing but are reasonable enough to realize they can't possibly use all the stuff they get. Rather than draw criticism, they deflect it by donating it to charity. In the end, sure I suppose it's good that the needy get donations but I find it very odd.

This only works on TV, not in real life. Every coupon I've seen usually has some kind of catch, or limit of some sort to avoid this type of thing. For example "save 50 cents on a case of Pepsi, limit 1 per customer". Most coupons will have a clause like that.

The store doesn't care! Coupons are paid by the manufacturer.

  1. Product normally costing $5 is on sale for $2.50.
  2. Customer presents a coupon for $3 off which doesn't specify to be capped at sale price.
  3. Customer leaves with 50 cents.
  4. Store gets $3 from manufacturer minus 50 cents paid to customer, net $2.50.
  5. Everybody wins!

I'm just stating fact, most coupons have limits, not to mention they are rather low and not really worth it. There may be the odd good ones but it's rare. For example I got this McDonald's coupons in the mail it said "$20 of coupons". In fine print: "Limit 1 coupon per visit". You have to read the fine print.

dude, you have countless people in THIS VERY THREAD who practice extreme couponing.

one coupon doesn't mean shit, but 50 coupons @ 50 cents each + money back from the store via promotions (cough CVS/RiteAid/Walgreens cough) = real money

not gonna lie, it's fun as FUCK to walk out of CVS with $50 in goods for $15, with $15 additional (free) dollars to be used on the next visit.

Um.. It took like 10 seconds to find this post on slickdeals:

I went out and to be honest had a blast doing the deals. I'm sorry to hear that it is still not working for everyone. I do think there must be some other issues like this only works on new registers in this particular way. Out of 12 transactions I only had 1 did not work. I believe it must have been an item not working. Many of mine were repeats of others or slightly different but I figured it might help someone to repeat them. Recap:

1st transaction:
2 Kix PSP $3.49
2 BC Ultimate PB Brownie PSP $3.29
5 BC Ultimate Fudge Brownie PSP $3.29
After coupons final cost of $9.90 and received $10 cat

2nd transaction:
2 BC Loaded Mashed Potatoes PSP $2.25
4 BC Chocolate Chip Muffin Mix PSP $3.29
4 BC Cinnamon Struesel Muffin Mix PSP $3.29
After coupons and a $10 Cat , $3.20 received another $10 cat

3rd transaction:
4 Total PSP $5.49
2 Cinnamon Toast Crunch PSP $4.99
After coupons $7 and received $10 cat

4th transaction: I think I went a bit over because the Muddy Buddies were higher PSP than the other chex mix and my bugles were also higher PSP.

3 Chex Mix Muddy Buddy PSP $3.29
5 Bugles chocolate and peanut butter PSP $3.19
2 BC Sugar Cookie Mix PSP $2.99
After coupons $9.20 and received $10 cat

5th transaction:
4 CF Vanilla Chip PSP $4.79
2 CF Peanut Pretzel PSP $4.79
After coupons and a 410 GM cat it was $2 and I received a $10 GM CAT

6th transaction: FAIL
2 Ham & Egg Biscuits
2 Bacon & Egg Biscuits
2 Sausage & Egg Biscuits
2 Bacon Scrambles
After Coupons $8
I did not receive the $10 cat so I know one of the items is not working. It is either the Ham or Sausage Biscuits because I did a transaction later with the 2 bacon and it worked fine.

7th transaction:
2 Total PSP $5.29
6 Grands Biscuits Homestyle Buttermilk PSP $2.59
2 Grands Biscuits Flaky Buttermilk PSP $2.59
After coupons $11.20 and received $10 cat

8th transaction:
6 CF Chocolate Chip PSP $4.69
After coupons and $10 cat = $2 and received $10 cat

9th transaction:
11 Grands Biscuits Homestyle Buttermilk PSP 42.59
After coupons and $10 cat $2.50 and received $10 cat

10th transaction:
3 Strawberry & Creme Cheese Toaster Strudels PSP $2.75
3 Blueberry Toaster Strudels PSP $2.75
4 Strawberry Toaster Strudels PSP $2.75
After coupons and $10 cat, $4.40 and received $10 cat

11th transaction: I had to increase to 16 veggies due to low PSP at this particular store - both had the pink tags
8 GG Healthy Weight Veggies PSP $1.69
8 GG Teriyaki Veggies PSP $1.69
After coupons and $10 cat, $1 and received $10 cat

12th transaction:
4 Pillsbury Biscuits Bacon & Egg PSP $3.79
4 Pillsbury Scrambles Bacon PSP $3.79
After coupons $7.80 and received $10 cat

Then I went home to put it all away.

I don't think I'd eat any of that though with a few exceptions. Mostly junk food.

VERY few Manufacturer coupons have limits like that. P & G started putting a limit of 4 per customer on theirs. I am not aware of any other manufacturer that has followed suit. Store coupons usually have this language, but EC usually doesn't rely on store coupons.

None of those things look like food. Food comes from outside, from the garden, the orchard, the field, the sea. Not from factories. Donating these things is somewhat like giving someone a present of diabetes.
