Well I picked up the camera, finally.

Before travelling the hour long trip to the store that had my camera, I called and asked to verify availbility. Three phone calls and 35 minutes later, I found out that they did not have the product where it was supposed to be, "Bin 7". Some lady that worked at that Sears called me back 20 minutes later and said that they had found the camera. Meanwhile, I called the guy who sold me the camera and he was, as always, very helpful and suportive. I decided (based on a reccomendation from both sears reps) to go to the store.

When I arrived, they told me that they had sold the camera. They doubted that the price could be so low so they called the store from which I bought it to verify. After a few minutes we concluded:

1. They had lost my reciept that I gave them to check stock.
2. They did NOT have the camera in stock, despite their computer saying they had 4 (one less since yesterday.. suprise, since I ordered it then).

The sales rep (the good guy who sold it to me) told me that his manager and he had located the camera at other locations, however, they would close in 5 minutes and I needed the camera.

The person who had lost my reciept and given me hassle before (at the far away store) decided to starting being nice and offered that should I wish to travel to a place about 1/2 way between this place and my house, that he would get someone to wait in the parking lot with the camera for me. He knew the security guard and someone else who, typically, didn't leave until 10:00 anyways.

Because I needed the camera tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6:30 and I get off work at 6:00, I decided to go get it tonight. The manager did the necessary paperwork, gave me directions, and I was on my way. After the 45 minute drive (OK, so it's a litle out of the way) I gave the security guard the reciept and got the camera.

All in all, quite a harsh night. I haven't had a chance to use the camera yet, but I will have a talk with my salesguy tomorrow. I'm going to ask him to try to do a follow-up pricematch to the 526$ price. If it works, great. If not, still a good deal.

Thanks for listening!

geez, i want one of these really bad. Even if you got NO warranty, that still gives you $500 worth of repairs before you get up to list price, right?
What could go wrong with camera?
Does it have known bugs?
I had a 505 - never a problem.
Grey market/US market/Brooklyn shyster - its all the same camera right? Same box, same accessories?

Now @ $504! But why wouldn't you just buy it from Royal? Or if you want to BVG to Royal's price, where would you purchase it? BVG will give you UP TO $250 back.

The Sony digital is great! Too bad, I bought mine for ~$900 a few months back. :|

It sucks shooting photos in detail or up close, but otherwise, the MP's are crystal-clear.

Anyways, let us know if you intend to buy from these guys and if you receive the digital.

OK, let me set something straight here. All these camera stores (Alien Photo, AMP Photoworld) are bait&switch stores and have absolutely no intention to ship a Sony DCS-F707 for anywhere near the $526 pricetag, because sony sells them to distributors at $750 plus!!

Here are 2 ways this scenario may play out:
They convince you to buy about $700 worth of accessories ( including the ones that come in the box) for hugely inflated prices.

2. They see that you're not interested in accessories and after taking your credit card info the camera suddenly disapoears from stock with no estimated arrival date or just doesn't get shipped.

Grey market cameras have absolutely no warranty in the US and even third-party warranty providers don't provide warranties for grey-market models. So the "Extended-warranty" they sell you is essentiallly useless.

Hope this clearifies things a little.

I can't believe people are still gullible enough to think they're going to get a camera from Royal, A&M, Digital Liquidators, etc. for the advertised price. Sure who would care about the warranty if you could get a camera for 1/2 what it costs elsewhere. The secret is YOU CAN'T. Not only is the camera grey market but the price is for the camera only. They then sell you all accessories for huge mark-ups. Fine, you say I don't need no stinkin' accessories. They will tell you the camera is out of stock, or suddenly the price is higher. Many times they will simply hang up on you. Many people are so desparate to get a good deal they fall for sales pitch with all the high priced accessories. You end up paying MORE for the camera than if you just ordered it from a reliable retailer. I have read about people who have fallen for the sales pitch from these guys. They get a photocopied manual, many times unreadable. All standard accessories are missing. They end up paying $200-300 MORE for accessories that are supposed to be included. The camera often has problems and guess what- the shady retailer hangs up on them and they have NO WARRANTY because it is a grey market camera.

Wake up people. I am sick of seeing these threads for hot deals from the same bogus low ball resellers over and over. Most of these guys never admit in when they realize their hot deal was a rip off. Where are the MODERATORS these days? These threads should be locked. :disgust::Q:|

Beachcamera is decent ... but they aren't cheap. I got a JVC mini dv camcorder from them a year back. They were about $100 less than B&H. Had no problem getting warranty from JVC.

Kinda...sorta off topic...but does anyone know if the Nikon CP5700 is available in the U.S. yet? If so where would be a good place to buy?

You can get a digital camera for FREE!!! All you need is a wire cutter and some good running shoes. Walk in to the electronics store of your choice, clip the little wire securing the camera of your choice, and RUN!!

Dunno.

Point is (for those of you still considering this deal), your odds of getting the F707 for that price from these retailers are about as good as you successfully making it out of the store without getting taken down.

like someone said before, sears is taking PM for couple of the websites. Just print out a whole bunch of page from these vendors with the price and shipping and handling and try your luck at your local Sears. I got mine for $626 plus tax after bringing in over 5 websites' prices, which is still a good price considering what you have to pay on other places.

Can you tell us which Sears had the cameras in stock? Were there more left? I called 6 Sears around me, and they are all sold out. (One even told me, "You're the 3rd person to call about that camera today..." )

Thanks for any help.

I just got my check for Amex PM, so final price of $508 + 40 tax = 548.
I'm extremely satisfied with the camera

The camera does have 'bugs'. Go to http://www.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1009 and ask about BFS, LEVBFS or LSD and see what kind of reaction you get =). Even with all that said, the camera is a thing of beauty.

Repairs cost quite a bit (had to send my cam to sony and they charged me for repairs before i sent my receipt in). Lens adjustment (for LSD) and the BFS fix w/ labor were around $170.

The websites listed give you a grey market camera with NO warranty, NO Accessories (ac adapter, battery, etc.) and try charging you out the nose for stuff. Strictly bait and switch at it's finest, but what the hey...people fall for it every day.

The Sears PM is the way to go really. Many have gone that route and now own 707's WITH a 2yr replacement plan and still got it below cost (which is around $740-$800 nowadays).
