you can do it without bending/reinterpreting the rules a bit. for example, if a line goes through a corner, does that count as 0 gates, 1 gate, or 2 gates? likewise, does it have to be one continuous line (or can you lift your pencil)? what about a line that is right on top of an edge of the rectangle? we'd need to have clearly defined rules to prove it's possible (by solving) or impossible...

You can't lift your pencil, and the corner bit I'm getting clarified within the next two hours. I'm going to see if the professor who wanted to bet me $50 there was a solution was including any type of trickery (such as corners) in the process, even though he did originally say there was none.

Heheh, I say he's just messing with you guys. He might as well asked you to disprove graph theory.

JaAG's Solution

- JaAG

lol winner!

I was starting to wonder if anybody would answer the question, so I did another "solution" while I was waiting.

This one is yet another abuse of the rules, but it's still a legitimate answer. It works since the middle gate (and not the left or right) is actually at the point where my line crosses. I follow the gate and cross it in red.

Though this highly depends upon if you consider the diagram to be

``|``
or
____
|_|_|

My solution requires that it be the first and that the my black paintbrush cross it at that infinitesimally small point between the top left and the top right.

Example

Edit: The bottom image is an example of a 'mess-up', with an x over the two missed gates.

oh come on, this is ATOT. everyone had it solved before they even looked at it.

Heheh, the concept is good but we just need to hammer out the details. Either way we should be able to get a preliminary paper published on what we have right now.

The OP obviously knows that this is impossible as do everyone else here. It took 200 years to solve? Yah, that totally makes sense, because people need to try that long to realize the solution. And notice he puts a or after proving that each one is false, which suggests that he is enjoying everyone struggle to solve a puzzle that is impossible to solve.

He probably made up the professors, or they are just dumb.

So it was originally designed without a solution?
