I don't game on consoles because I like to tinker. I'm not a set it and forget it type of guy.

Same, I love to tinker and build computers. I have tried to game on consoles, mostly for NCAA Football, but the graphics are just so bad on consoles.

I just can't deal with having the same exact setup as every other guy. Kind of why I don't have a civic or mustang either, lol. I hope that doesn't start another war.

To those of you who are displeased with the performance gains this round, I think this is a generation of refinement. Which is a good thing. There really isn't a need for huge performance gains this late in the console generation. Resolution increases have gotten stagnant as well. For 85% (pulled from A-Noose) of the gamer population a GTX 280 can provide all the power one needs.

Also, I think it's rediculous people trying to compare Tahiti to Gk 110. Clearly that part is way off and not ready for prime time. For all we know, AMD has a part in line to combat that and didn't feel the need to say "we expected more from our competitor" to boost customer confidence. There already has been speculation from Sapphire showing a 2300+ shader core part on the horizon.

Not terribly surprised. JHH has said that raising prices is "bad mojo," in the past. And NVDA almost always asks for a price premium when they think they can get away with it. So it sounds like NVDA will play it safe and price the GTX 680 at ~$550 (maybe a bit more or less, depending on how badly NVDA wants to win back market share, and depending on how well the GTX 680 stacks up against the 7970 in all aspects, including VRAM, feature set, power draw, temperatures, noise, etc.). If it doesn't sell well, NVDA can simply lower the price.

These prices for AMD and NVDA 28nm GPUs barely move the needle on price/perf, compared to the last couple of generations at launch, even factoring in the extra VRAM. On the bright side, though, most games don't really push graphics that hard, so most people can simply sit this round out unless they have super-high resolutions or 120Hz/3D panels or something. And even those people cold probably turn down settings a bit and do okay with last-generation cards, if necessary.

The consumer in me is pissed off at 28nm thus far, but the cheap bastard in me is now even happier with this gtx 480. I think I'm going to try for an AMD card next time I buy something, but I'll probably be skipping 28nm.

If the charge $500 for GK104 for GTX580 +30-40% performance, they will face the same shitstorm as AMD. At least from me

I think that introducing the midrange first is a LOT better strategy than doing what they did to gtx 480: rushing it out with terrible noise/heat/power at launch. Remember how great gtx 460 was when it first came out? It was like a godsend for NV after the woodscrews/way it's meant to be grilled/mega delays/etc etc etc crap that they had just wandered through. IF gtx 460 had been first, NV would have gotten some criticism for bringing gtx 480 late to the party, but they would have gotten through it and had a clear winner on their hands. Clearly, they have learned their lesson and are bringing out the gtx 460 equivalent card (should be gtx 660) first, and thanks to AMD's terrible pricing and conservatice clocks, NV will actually be able to call their midrange the GTX 680. There is precedent for this, as 9800gtx wasn't much improvement over 8800gtx. In fact, gtx 680 will likely be a larger improvement over gtx 580 than 9800gtx was over 8800gtx. JHH should be sending RR a thank you card, and we (few) decidedly neutral gpu consumers should be sending him a lump of coal.

Their memory controller problem is another story.

Everything about the card screams mid range to me, 32 ROPs, 256 bus, performance.

If it trades blows with the 7970 it's less than 13% faster than the 580 at 1200p in DX11, and if it's less than 13% faster, this is the first time in forever I can remember Nvidia releasing a flagship gpu that is less than 13% faster than their last gen flagship.

What it does remind me of though, is mid range card vs last gens flagship.

For instance, GTX 460 vs GTX 280:

Or GTX 560 TI vs GTX 285, which opened the gap up even larger between last gen high end refresh vs current gen mid range refresh.

Call me crazy though.

You memory apparently isn't very good. 9800gtx vs 8800 ultra. Even vs the 8800gtx it wasn't that much of an improvement.

The 9800GTX+ used the same architecture as the 8800 series though. It wasn't much faster because it was essentially a bumped up 8800GT. 6970 - 7970 is a completely different story.

This isn't true. I was in the front row, even asked a question. (the one about water cooling) I was drinking beer with friends in the back room at the pre-event party. I had lunch with 4 guys from NV at the lowest level of tables at the chicken/pasta lunch. The only thing I skipped was the dinner the second night, because I was beat from the last two days and wanted to get to bed early before my 12 hour travel day yesterday.

And Sky, I'm about 6'5" and go over 3 bills in my post weight lifter middle aged slide. I can't exactly "hide". Would have been a pleasure to meet you, but there were a lot of people there. I couldn't have met them all if I tried. (although as you're at all of these I can see how you'd know most of those people- I'm sure it's the same crew every time unless a fringe guy like me opts to attend)

So rollo is the guy behind OBR hardware? If so that is just for the lols...or am I reading this wrong.

This is one of my first posts in this forum but I have to state that I strongly believe that the GK104 will not be around $500. I strongly believe a price of $400 will be better for Nvidia.

Nvidia originally planned this to be their midrange graphics ship. They must have invested much in production and know that the market for $500 video cards are not that strong compared to the average price graphics cards are sold at in 2011 (trying to find the source but seems to be reasonable).

I strongly believe that the GK104 will be released at a price near $400 if it closes in near the performance of the AMD HD 7970 if it is even slightly less powerful. This will rock the boat of AMD's pricing schedule enough to cause AMD trouble but allowing Nvidia to fill in their product range easily while removing the 400 and 500 series from their channels. Filling in the old price market for the GTX 570 would make much sense from a marketing prospective.

Not really 4xx to 5xx was a refresh.

The clock for clock/core for core performance of GF100 and GF110 were pretty much unchanged.

Ahh ok, reason I asked is I'm still rocking a GTX285 and haven't really followed graphics cards for quite awhile. I forgot about nvidia's whole tick-tock thing though.

lol, looks like you were duped twice.

First by nvidia calling the GTX 5 series a new series and then secondly referring to it by intel's development strategy.

Marketing for the win!!

Kind of reminds me of back when I was in high school (15years ago) and all kinds of kids referred to the chicken nuggets as mcnuggets =)

Over here in Germany the 580s and 570 are getting cheaper considerably. 580 for 340 Euros, 580 3GB for 400. 570 for 250. Kepler is close
