I am about to buy a new set of eye-glasses, and my prescription at any standard place like LensCrafters is about $300 just for the lenses (i.e. no frames). I showed my prescription to the folks at Costco Vision Center, and they quoted me about $100 for the lenses (the set, not each). I've seen good deals at Costco before but this one made me a little wary. Does anyone know anything about different quality levels of lenses, and how to evaluate a given merchant? Has anyone purchased glasses from Costco before?
I am a firm believer in you-get-what-you-pay-for, but I also know that the markup on eyewear borders on criminal. I am more than willing to pay the $300 if I am getting a significantly better product, because I wear glasses every day and it's vital that I have a really good set. Also, given that I've had my current pair for about 3 years, a savings of $200 over a span of 2 years isn't going to be worth it if I have to replace the $100 pair when they fall apart after being chewed on by my 1 year-old nephew (such abuse does not affect my current pair).
Many thanks.
