Dangit - I just bought a 4 port 10/100 linksys [and got a gateway/router for free]. Only reason I'm buying this is because it has a printer port. =)

just to let you guys know. many had reported that this router is slower than both linksys and netgear routers. From my personal experience with the SMC router (at home) and Linksys (At work), the Linksys does seem to be a little faster and more responsive. Is it just me? or everyone who has this router are having the same experience? Comments are welcome

You know Buy.com has this router for 98.95 Link If you could hold off for free shipping you could get it for 88.95 with a $10 off $30 coupon.

i tried price matching over the phone with compusa, but was told they could only price match in the store since the store needs to call the local competitor to verify price and availability. since i am in the sf bay area, onvia is located outside the 15 mile radius that is used to define local competitor.

if any of you are located close to onvia's head quarters, you might be able to swing a price match with compusa.

huanthi, the cheapest place to get CAT5 cables is to make your own. Go to Home Depot or your local electrical supply store (where contactors get their stuff) and buy a spool of cable and go to Radio Shack or equivalent and get a crimper and some plugs.

huesmann, the only problem with your idea is the fact that if he only needs a few cables, buying the crimping tool far outweighs the price of purchasing pre-made cables at mom and pop computer shops.

i dont know how much of a known fact this is since we accidentally discovered it ourselves but you can share dsl thru a hub. that's what we do and it works fine..we each get our own ip address. and the hub was only 20 bucks! compared to 100 dollars for a router or whatever. i'm not exactly sure how it works but something like you hook the modem to the uplink..

Well This router is a great little sucker I've come to discover. I had to RMA the first one that came, it was apparently defective... but I've had no troubles with the second unit. it comes with two cat5 cables that are fairly long which is handy. hope you all enjoy yours...

I just bought a 4 port 10mbps hub for $35 (actually my parents did)
I have enough ethernet cards, (3), and now all i need is the cable (and you would need that anyway for your router.)

Why should i get a router instead of setting up a network?

PS i have no networking experiance, my friend (who does) is going to help me. Another problem might be that the 2 computers that we are netwroking are both running WIN 98.

Please guys: anny tips on why i should get router or the hub will be fine?

How does this work for online gaming?
I've heard thre are some problem setting up ports.
Not really probel but you Have to manually set up a port for each online game you play? How hard is it?

Do you need seperat IP address for 2 player onling at once or do these use NAT
link the Linksys?

coopa: You can use a hub instead of a router, but it's more difficult to set up. If you're on a budget, I recommend going the hub route. Check out Practically Networked and Home PC Lan for more details.

srxtreme: I have the SMC Barricade router, and have had no problems playing online games. I play Q3, Counter-Strike, and others, with minimal configuring. If a game/application needs a special port for some reason, you can just open it in the router configuration.

Review of the SMC Barricade? SMC7004BR
4-port 10/100 Mbps Broadband Router
Last updated: 12 September, 2000
"The Barricade? is an ideal all-in-one networking solution for home and small business users. This protocol independent multi-functional broadband router is combined with a 4-port 10/100 Mbps dual-speed switch, and incorporates both a built-in print server and an Internet firewall for security against hackers and other unauthorized users.
The Barricade? provides a WAN port as well as Network Address Translation (NAT), which extends simultaneous Internet access for up to 253 PCs on the LAN. The new broadband router also allows the connection of multiple users to the Internet using a single WAN/IP address. LAN and IP addresses are auto- assigned and easily managed, and the IP routing supports a range of popular applications.

This new device is a complete networking solution for PC or Mac users, and is backed by SMC?s limited lifetime warranty and 24/7 technical support."

thanks for the info lint21

I think that for the better (faster) switch that is 10/100 as opposed to a non-switching hub that is only 10mbps and the fact that its easyer to set up, makes it worth the extra $65 odd bucks.
