Given the pieces of F-16 all over the place good news about the Cessna pilot seems unlikely.

It's scary how fast it can happen. I was in a 152 a few years ago when out of nowhere four C-130's flew directly under me. No heads up or anything. MARSA I guess. Scared the crap outta me

I don't even understand how this can happen in this day and age. I feel bad for the pilots.

People do make mistakes and some of them are unfortunately fatal. Could have also been a number of different failures in equipment.

F-16 cruises at like 3x the max speed of a Cessna, only scenario that I could see where it's not 100% the fighter pilot's fault is if there was a disaster before the collision and he lost control.

I feel like "watch me buzz this guy" is far more likely.

Mid-air collisions are pretty rare today thanks to better radar and traffic management procedures, but they do happen. Humans make mistakes.

Is that trailer made out of Wolverine's bones? Wonder how that chunk of engine got where it did.

Yeah, I was wondering that too. Fucking F-16 engine exhaust leaning against it. Not a scratch on it.

maybe it fell vertically and then tipped over and leaned against the trailer.
Lateral velocity gets lost, vertical velocity increases.

I haven't seen any details, but the Cessna pilot could have been just flying around on a nice day with minimal equipment. Transponders that report altitude are only required in certain airspace types. Without those a small plane like a Cessna may be hard to see on radar.

Visual flight rules and like I said no details so I can't comment on what type of airspace this occurred in. Cessna pilot may not have looked at an aeronautical chart and the F-16 pilot may have relied too much on his instruments... we will see.

I have to imagine it is pretty hard to intentionally hit another aircraft at those speeds. What are the odds of colliding by accident? Tiny fraction of a second difference and those two aircraft are not in the same spot at the same time. Both have no collision detection alarms or don't notice them? I don't understand how this happens.

Everything around it looks to be in pretty good shape too. Almost like someone carried it over and gently leaned it up against the camper

It does seem to be more common these days - at least for where I work and thats a good thing - at least where I work

It happens when somebody makes a mistake and those odds line up against them. Just because something is unlikely doesn't mean it won't happen, and there are thousands of aircraft flying over the U.S. at any given time. Not surprisingly collisions tend to happen at the origin and destination airports, where many aircraft come together and have to be brought into the same place in a regulated way.

I heard no survivors.

The F-16 pilot made it out alive, at least:

The military jet's pilot safely ejected, was picked up and then transported to a hospital, authorities said.

"From what I understand," Salisbury said, "he seemed to be in pretty good shape."
