Nobody seems to know what this means. Thinking it may be my computer, and it being a dedicated machine, I reformatted it and loaded everything fresh and got the same thing. A posting on the F@H got no answers.

A quick search revealed that at some obscure forum out there on the net, someone else had this problem and solved it by not using -advmethods. I'll try to find more info for you after school, if this doesn't work. And yes, be assured, it's a F@H problem, not anything to do with your local configuration (as I understand).

According to my limited understanding of such things, that error is due to slow IP communication. Most likely in the Stanford end, or backend of whatever you are trying to communicate with. So I dont `think` it would be your machine. Your request basically times-out because of the length of time trying to connect. Are you going thru any proxies at your workplace or something? That would(could) slow it down. hmmmmmmmmm

They are home machines, no proxies. Both machines worked fine on dsl and only had problems when I switched back to dialup. If the solution is not found on this board and no response on the F@H Home forum, who does have the answer? This is a fairly new machine and after a format and complete reinstall, I think the problem is most likely not me.

Everything, EXCEPT F@H, works perfectly. The configure connection is set to ask permission before connecting and to use internet explorer settings. After formatting and still having the problem leads me to continue to believe that dialup at F@H is the problem. 2 computers, 2 identical problems.

Have you tried saying "no" to "use internet explorer settings"?

I have dialup. I use the console client and don't use Internet Explorer settings.

EDIT: r0tt3n1 beat me! I was trying to find more info

If I uncheck Internet explorer settings, It appears I have to use a proxy setting. The auto install shows "localhost" as the address and "port 8080". I could try not checking anything. When I run my mouse over the red icon it now shows "starting local stats count". Never seen that before. How long does it take for the F@H site to show that a wu has been sent?

A few hours, usually.

I'm not sure what "starting local stats count" means. The client does keep track locally how many WUs have been sent it. But something like that should only take a short amount of time and the tooltip should show something else after a second.

I would be curious to know if the console client has the same problems as the GUI client on your computer.
