I went ahead and did some experimenting while I was waiting and found that I could run one SMP with the GPU2 on my Quad (WXP sp3). Overall PPD is (too soon for exact numbers) ! 1,500 higher than with two SMPs alone.

On the X2 I am running the GPU2 client only. PPD was ~800 with an SMP client, now it's ~3400

So by using my two 8800GTS (one is 640MB and one is 512MB) and leaving the other Quad alone with two SMPs my total PPD from these three computers has gone from ~7,000 to
~12,000 (VERY preliminary numbers)

Anyone know the impact of VRAM on folding results? Specifically, 8800GT 256MB versus 512MB? I can get a 256MB model at ZZF for $106 after MIR compared to the cheapest 512MB models at $130-140 after MIR. For a folding-only system, if there's no difference in results, I would just as soon save the $25.

Woot, go Sid!

Denithor: The devs recommend 512MB, as they plan to release much larger WUs in the future. We don't know yet what the performance impact would be from only having 256. As with gaming, it's a matter of future-proofing.

I don't think the client makes any attempt to detect your card's capabilities other than Yes/No. Ideally, they should add some sophistication to it eventually... <shrug>

still having some trouble with my 8800gt / Q6600 system

using 177.35 driver with WINxp

2 x SMP clients running with the FAH afffinity changer
1 x GPU client
info:
name: p5002_supervil
Progress: xx%
Performance: 338.92 iter / sec
Time Left: 2h: 15m: 30sec

FahMon info:
SMP1: 1584 PPD credit: 1920 points
SMP2: 1605 PPD credit: 1920 points
GPU2: 568.27* PPD credit: 98 points

why are my PPD's ridiculously low for the GPU2? and what does the star mean? the client has been running for about 12 hours total, with some restarts inbetween

I don't think 177.35 supports the 8800gt That is for GTX cards.

Get 174.55 here

yes, the way to maximize your production is one smp, 1 core for the gpu2 client, and one core to just crunch the regular way. you can't do two smp clients effectively using win xp.

so right now i need to delete one of my SMP client folders completely and download which one? can someone link me to the "single-core" client?

Er no, I'm not sure why some folks are recommending 3 clients total... just SMP (using 3 cores) & GPU (uses 1 core). Click the button in the GPU's config window for "Slightly higher priority" and away you go.

Otherwise, you have far more programs running than you have CPUs available.

The SMP client is supposed to be good for 4 cores. But if have a quad you can run 2 SMP clients + FAH affinity changer to get more points. 1 SMP client doesn't seem to max out a quad, even though it will show 100% CPU usage.

And stick with 177.35 it works great on my 9600GT (hitting 3200 ppd with just the GPU2 client on the box in my sig).

Not really hardly worth running an SMP client to me, I'll stick with the GPU and save the extra watts/avoid the extra heat from the CPU. I was only getting 300 ppd previously with the CPU client anyway.

Why were you only getting 300 ppd from your E8400? were you running the SMP client or the normal client. An E8400 OC'd should be getting at least 2000ppd with the SMP client.

that doesn't make sense that 9600gt gets 3200 ppd when my 3870 oc'd to 857 core /1161 mem only gets 2369. What is so different about these gpus, or is it just that they're giving the nvidia clients bonus points right now?

The GPU architectures are very different, and the code is different - CUDA for nVidia, CAL for ATI. You really can't relate their game performance to Folding.

A balanced scoring structure has never been F@H's strong suit.

fwiw - just installed the gpu client last night and it works fine using the 175.16 drivers for my 8800GT using Windows XP. I'm also running the 5.03 CPU client

Just downloaded the 175.19 drivers that just came out today. Will install in a little bit.

Spec's:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
RAM: Corsair XMS2 Dominator 2 x 2 GB
GFX: Gigabyte GV NX88T512HP (512 MB 8800GT)
MB: Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6
PSU: Corsair HX620W

OS: Windows XP 32bit
Driver: 177.35 with modded INF file.

Nothing OC'ed.

EDIT:
Passed 200k points today.... Yay!

that does seem a little odd that 8800gt would get more than double my 3870. gtx 280 I expect to see 8k +, but 2/3 of that for 8800gt just seems...wrong.

No idea why...
Was just posting what my FAHmon gave me...

Just pulled these numbers right now:
