how much difference would a dual 2.8ghz xeon make? I just started back up in seti, but the linux client for seti is painfully slow, and if those cycles can be put to more efficient use... Basically, im hunting around for the right project to put this machine onto.

Hiya. Thanx for your interest. That Xeon would make a great difference, any help does. The F@H project has a very well behaved Linux client. It runs natively, no need for wine or anything. The Linux client also is comparable to the F@H Windows client in terms of speed, the average points per day between the 2 clients favors Windows but only slightly, maybe 2-3%. The F@H Linux client would be a worthy DC project. Others would have better info about multiple instances if you are so inclined.

There are a couple big WU's in the oven, but I got some of the 63 point jobs, which doesn't do a lot to pad the output. I guess I'm spoiled for the big'uns.

I have a dual HT Xeon @2.5 with 1 GB ram, on which I run four instances with BigWUs (almost double points) and I get about 470 points per day (ppd).

Folding @ Home client does great on Hyperthreaded CPUs (11% to 33% increase in ppd on regular WUs, over 40% running BigWUs)

On windows, I don't have to set anything (process to CPU, and F@H is an Idle process that gives cycles up fast)

Any Linux users out there know if it is a hassle to set F@H to run?

F@H can be a hassle to set up to start automatically if you try to do so yourself (I learned the hard way), but since setting my Linux server up, I discovered that there's a very nice script out there that automates the process.

F@H on Linux is actually in some ways more flexible than F@H on Windows. For example, IIRC, it was possible to run more than 4 F@H clients on a Linux system back when Windows was limited to no more than that many. Just be sure to put the clients in separate folders, and give each an individual machine ID (if the Linux client uses Machine IDs like the Windows client does). You choose the ID in the advanced configuration options (don't worry, there's nothing too scarey in there).
