I'm tempted to spend the $729 +tax for the following (my wife will kill me):
Dell PowerEdge SC1430 Tower Server
Dual Quad Core Xeon 5310 1.6Ghz 4MB Cache
1GB mem
80GB HD,
No CD drive (want +$99 for CD drive),
1yr warranty,
No OS
Ubuntu is free.....I have a spare CD drive sitting around along with a spare keyboard and mouse.
I'm sure the SMP client would make nice use of 2 quad core processors.

Even though I was just talking in another thread about how I need a new vid card but don't want to drop $200 on an x1900 when i'm not building a new system for myself until next autumn, i'm SERIOUSLY considering this buy. I'll spend way less on this than on the PS3 (if you include games) and I'll have some serious PPD increase. UGH DECISIONS!!
edit: how much ram does that thing need though? I have a feeling it's going to be like 4gigs
Tell her we all said it was "OK."Originally posted by: Uppsala9496
If my wife wasn't due in January, I'd buy it and not tell her until it arrived.
It's soooooooo tempting though. Although she did say "If you really want it, please get it."
Nothing like a guilt trip.

seriously, though, why spend $710 when you could build a better Q6600 rig for more like $500? here's the breakdown:
$266 Q6600
$70 AR for ip 35 e
$25 for a cheap-o pci-e gpu
$55 AR for 2gb of 4-4-4-12 ddr2 800 at newegg
$40 for antec earthwatts 430 w at newegg
$45 for decent case.
that gets you what the dell has, plus you can probably get a decent oc to 2.7-3.0 on stock cooling as a bonus!

Overclocking the Q6600 may provide enough to keep up with 8 cores
Just looks at the climateprediction top computers gives me this idea
There are several intel Q6600's in with the top PCs which all seem to be xeon E53XX series
They are no doubt overclocked

Found an single E5310 in the top computers
http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac...tail.php?hostid=683832
Measured floating point speed 1381.48 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 3257.35 million ops/sec
my Q6600 @ stock on climate prediction
Measured floating point speed 2323.2 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 5085.67 million ops/sec
It looks to me like a little OC may just push it to compete with 8 core E5310

Yeah, and you can use it as an emergency jack stand for your ride, while you take your custom wheel/tire to be fixed:Originally posted by: Uppsala9496
