And of course there is MadMurph. The new contender that got me to buy 2 more quads for the Dec race, and still on my heels ! And he (like you) has more resources than in his own house, which is all I have, all dedicated to this cause.

Markfw, is ubuntu linux still working for you? I find once you get it set up which can be very frustrating, it's a set and forget folding system. The linux fah smp is much more stable than the windows version. You can start/stop the client without fear of losing the work, etc.

Linux more recently and unix before are stable OS's for scientific computing. At work, we have a linux cluster that we send off jobs to for heavy computing.

Windows is useful for all the gadgets and electronic gizmos that the average consumer needs to connect to their computer: ipods, inkjet printers, scanners, nice sound systems, etc.

Edit; Windows is not a scientific computing platform but the DC scientists have to figure out a way to support it 'cause that's the OS that the vast majority of us use!

Gravity, if you'd like to try ubuntu linux on a couple of quads, Markfw and I would help out.

Video card support is the biggest issue. Intel provides the best support for linux so motherboards with onboard intel video are a good choice. Nvidia is a distant second and ATI is a far distant third for linux driver support.

Cheers!

Hmm I'm not so sure that most DCers do use Linux ,I don't for starters
Good excuse for a poll thread I say!

Sorry, I meant Windows is not a scientific computing platform. Linux is!

biodoc, I still have 4 machines with it installed, and only one has hung on me. But in the same time period, windows has not hung at all (but many times before it has). After I found the affinity changer, I have established that it is 8-10% faster on the same hardware, and I think a little more trouble free.

In addition to being a great Cruncher and TeAm-mate you're a class act, Gravity. Crunch on, and remember a lot can happen in three months. Wait until Mark starts getting his Winter power bills.

Point well taken...I thought your post said it was the other way around. I was getting 4400 ppd on ubuntu @3.2GHz.

windows@3.2=4000 ppd
ubuntu@4.2=4400 ppd

All 2653 units, both running 8x400

BTW, windows just hung@3.2 @ 78% of a wu, and I lost it....

Bummer..I hate when that happens:evil:

The Fah TeAm should be quite a show this fall when Markfw, Murph & Gravity are cranking out those SMP WUs

I went back to windows on 2 boxes, as they kept downloading 306x units, and were getting 1300 ppd each (2600 pd for the box) and with windows I can get 4000. In a few days when the timelimits expire, I may try ubuntu again and see if they get the 26xx units that get 2500 ppd (under ubuntu) I think that its garbage to get 1/2 the credit for the same computer.

OK, here's what I have on this box:

It's a q6600 running XP pro OC'd at 3.2. First I had installed four instances of the console client. Then I stopped them all and ran smp. Then I installed the affinity program which runs as a service and installed a 2nd instance of smp. That's when things slowed to a crawl.

I deleted a few fah folders containing the console client and thought I had only the smp client running. The affinity program is still running.

When I look at task manager, I have 100% activity on all cores. I also have the following processes running:

fah.exe
fah6-win-x86-console.exe
fahcore_81.exe
fahcore_a1.exe
fahcore_a1.exe
fahcore_a1.exe
fahcore_a1.exe
fahSmpAffinityChanger.exe

So, it seems that there is a core running but that the affinity changer has spread it to the various cores. Perhaps the fah6 core was installed to a different location and continues to run.

From the smp log file I'm seeing a step completed about every 11 minutes.

I found another instance of the beta console that I must have missed installing!!!! FvCK!! It was working like a hebrew slave and had ANONYMOUS as the user!!! Dang, I cannot tell you how angry that makes me!! Completed 5 units for Anon and team 0. Argh!!!!

Well, again, had we not had this thread, I would be folding for team 0!

ok, maybe that's why the dual smp clients wouldn't work? Because I was using one console client and one smp client?

Please advise,

Gravity

Sometimes I make myself laugh!

I have the dual smp clients installed now. I eliminated the instance of the console beta which should allow the smp's to operate as they should. I now show 8 instances of the fahcore_a1.exe in task manager and I have the config set correctly. I cannot tell you how many machines contributed to FAH before I joined team AT and how many I failed to config that might still be working for the cause named Anonymous!

I think I have this licked.....

Yup there are too many F@H clients!

Good thing is - they are working toward having fewer by giving options during config of v6 as to how you want to run.
