Markfw, is ubuntu linux still working for you? I find once you get it set up which can be very frustrating, it's a set and forget folding system. The linux fah smp is much more stable than the windows version. You can start/stop the client without fear of losing the work, etc.
Linux more recently and unix before are stable OS's for scientific computing. At work, we have a linux cluster that we send off jobs to for heavy computing.
Windows is useful for all the gadgets and electronic gizmos that the average consumer needs to connect to their computer: ipods, inkjet printers, scanners, nice sound systems, etc.
Edit; Windows is not a scientific computing platform but the DC scientists have to figure out a way to support it 'cause that's the OS that the vast majority of us use!
Gravity, if you'd like to try ubuntu linux on a couple of quads, Markfw and I would help out.
Video card support is the biggest issue. Intel provides the best support for linux so motherboards with onboard intel video are a good choice. Nvidia is a distant second and ATI is a far distant third for linux driver support.
Cheers!
