Dude, spybot has a horrible GUI in my opinion. But that's only opinion.

What matters is that you people who say "oh spybot found these additional that ad-aware didn't find" don't realize that maybe that's because you are finding things BUILT IN TO WINDOWS!!! Like that media player entry, the "what's related?" alexa IE entry... That stuff is all in windows and *most* of it is completely harmless, or at minimum, is NOT what ad-aware is searching for in the first place!

So please, don't say "spybot found more" when the search criteria isn't even the same.
Try spybot after setting the "file sets" setting to "spyware only" and then compare. That's a more even comparison.

Ok, so now that I got that out of the way... It is a good idea to use two utilities and not just trust one with everything. I have spybot installed too, just for being double sure.

The Pro Version unlocks a nice process examiner that tells you parents and details on every currently running process
It also has the mark all references for deletion and the adwatch real-time app

I have to agree with straubs. You should probably run both. I ran both and spybot found 2 or 3 extra things. But, I am sure if I ran them in the other order, then adaware would have found a couple of things that spybot missed. Also, the interface is much better on adaware. Just my $0.02.

It seems like the stuff that Spybot spots and Ad-aware doesn't are just left over registery entries and whatnot. Honestly, I don't mind a few stray entries as long as the actual spyware gets cleared out. From Rob's test, it seems like Spybot is better at COMPLETELY clearing out spyware. Either piece of software would work for me I guess, but I've been using Ad-aware for a while now so I'll stick with it.

Ad-aware 6.0 - I ran it a couple three times, and ran again today. At first I would do the default scan using default settings and all the items it found were checked. Hitting Next, it would remove all the items. I just ran it and it found a slew of items (25 new items), however they were all unchecked. If I go Next, it says there's nothing to do. You can Cancel or go Next, neither of which does ANYTHING. I can't imagine why it's not checking them by default now. I can't select all and check them all, any way I've tried (control key + shift).What's up with all this?? I had similar issues with the 5.x versions of Ad-aware. What am I missing here?

Edit: OK, I've started sloging through the Help, which looks like a book and (at least at the beginning) has a LOT of self promotion, but I didn't do anything to reconfigure the default behavior and wonder why it won't do what it did before. Thanks for any guidance.

You should be able to right-click and get the option "select all"---I did it just this morning (mine sometimes checks them automatically and sometimes doesn't).

OK, thanks. Weird program that sometimes does, sometimes doesn't, eh? I was wondering if its a ruse to get you to pay for the full version or something. I hadn't thought to look for a context menu. Yep, it's right there. Thanks again.

Oh, you mean they have it on for the first go-round, and then make you check them? Weird, man, weird. Anyway, a right click and then a left fixes THAT problem.
