There's been an attempt to whitewash some of his shit (like his comments about fascism that's been linked in this thread already, the aforementioned fucking young teenaged girls), and if you bring this stuff up (or dare, *gasp* to not accept that he was just a total absolute unmitigated musical genius) you'll get trashed online.

Some of this (like the thing about the married couple) I recall from a Last Podcast On The Left episode from years back (I can't really recommend that podcast due to their horrible handling of allegations against one of their hosts), but they were more trying to make it out as though Bowie made Chaos Magic and that ridiculously stupid bullshit Aleister Crowley mysticism to be true. This was around the time that at least 2 of the hosts had cum shrines in their homes as part of them trying to legitimately practic Chaos Magic.

I have never gotten the appeal of David Bowie. I like a few of his songs, yeah, but never bought any of his albums. Fame, The Man Who Sold the World, good songs, I guess few others.

An album I bought recently, a double album, Linton Kwesi Johnson, from Jamaica originally (black), then England, this song, Inglan is a Bitch (patois, for England). This is from about that time, 1980.

I personally have never understood it either and basically put it up as he was the musician equivalent of Rocky Horror Picture Show, where he was valued more for his queer icon status than for the actual content. He has like 3-5 songs that I think are any good across like 4 decades of making music. Then again, I think half the music people like of his was from the time when he was deliberately trying to make bad music because he wanted out of his record deal.

The Sid Vicious line in this surprised me because there’s nothing less punk rock than being a Nazi. Sounds like he was an 18 year old nihilistic anarchist wearing Nazi trash for shock value. Maybe edgy in the 70s I guess despite being very lame in 2024?

Actual skinheads/neo-Nazis were a big part of the punk scene from the start. Lots of the bands openly courted that, some have since tried to claim they were just doing it to rile people up, but let's just say there's a few punk musicians that might have the most prolific collection of Nazi "memorabilia" in the entire world. That's not something you do just to get a rise out of people, let alone back when punk bands weren't making shit for money

FWIW I slightly disagree - both always had rancid views (even if Morrissey kept quiet about his for a long time), the difference is merely that Morrissey briefly made some decent music (never liked Bowie's work).

Just today discovered this gem in a Google search. I never saw these guys perform but when this 7" 33RPM "mini LP" came out in 1982 I played the shit out of it on my college radio show (5 out of the 6 songs). They were San Francisco punk, my station across the bay, UC Berkeley KALX FM. You could play this unexpurgated in those days, not these days on the airwaves. No Nazi shit here, but a lot of emotion. Bare in mind, very diverse ethnicity in the region.
