About 5 month ago I did my life insurance screening and it came back that my cholesterol was high. So much for the premium rate.

Went to the doctor a few weeks later to "interpret" the results and see where things stood and what could be done. Doc said, "Let's change diet, exercise a bit more and see what happens."

4 months later, 20 pounds lighter, my cholesterol is still ridiculous on both ends of the scale (HDL and LDL). After talking to my sister, turns out my family is predisposed to high cholesterol in general - she's a vegetarian ffs and still has high cholesterol.

Oh well, screwed is me. Look out Big Pharma, here my wallet comes! *sigh*

fish oil and exercise should raise the hdl. A lot of fish oil.

Edit: But you'll still need a pill for the ldl.

OP, being predisposed I think you'll have a hard road to travel. I think you're off to a good start by losing wt. You can try adding fish oil but I think it will be just one piece of the puzzle. Also, being predisposed might mean that the normal range may not apply to you. You may be able to live healthy with high cholesterol. Talk to your DR.

I have a coworker in the same boat as you but with high blood pressure.

A few years ago, my cholesterol tested a little high. I started taking fish oil and it lowers it just within recommendation. I take three pills a day. I don't see the same benefit from two pills a day. I take three 1200mg fish oil soft gels with 360 mg of omega fatty acids per pill.

Welcome to the club. Mine is ridiculous. The nurse is always amazed that I have good blood pressure though.

I used to have high cholesterol (240 or so if I remember correctly) and ridiculous blood pressure (213/135). Since changing diet (more fish/chicken, no more fast food), adding blood pressure and anti cholesterol pills, and exercising more, I'm good to go.

Despite being 90 pounds overweight for years, my pressure and cholesterol are just fine.

I have no idea why, but am grateful. I dont drink or smoke, so maybe that helps. I jog, I do yoga. I just need to lose the gut.

I'm the same genetically... my family all has high cholesterol. Historically, I don't know of anyone in my family that has ever died of heart disease.

My blood pressure is normal. I do resistance training 2-3x/week as well as run 10+miles. Resting HR is 40-50bpm. I take fish oil daily. I don't remember what my ldl/hdl was but my total was 202 if I recall.

Don't sweat it.

It's never really been proven that High Cholesterol really raises the chances of heart attack.

It's always been MAYBE

Continue on with good diet/physical activity and give it more time.

Remember, once you start taking those pills...you are stuck with them FOREVER (most doctors won't tell you that).

My LDL went from 156 to 90. Painless. And I still eat like shit.

I loathe the idea of maintenance meds. I'm already on one as of ~2 months ago, but that's in lieu of taking advil like candy at the drop of a hat anymore.

I'm free from about 9pm to ~11pm if I stay up that late...

what time do you wake up in the morning? what time do you usually go to lunch?

it was tough but i used to wake up an hour earlier every day in order to workout. now i go to the gym during my lunch hour and just eat lunch at my desk instead of eating out.

For what it's worth, I spend my lunch walking. More than likely over the next couple weeks I'll be spending my mornings biking to work and my afternoons biking back home from work, assuming I can survive the 4 miles each way.
