Eat oatmeal. I have used to have high cholesterol as well. I would eat 2 packs of oatmeal a day(at least, I love oatmeal). I dropped from 280 to 170 in two months. I didn't eat the plain stuff either, I ate the maple stuff. I have cut down on Oatmeal a bit, but I still eat a few packs a week, and it has kept my cholesterol around the 200 mark.

For what it's worth, I spend my lunch walking. More than likely over the next couple weeks I'll be spending my mornings biking to work and my afternoons biking back home from work, assuming I can survive the 4 miles each way.

i understand you have 5 kids and seemingly no time to workout. i have 2 kids (6 and 9) and an 11 week old puppy. it seems lunchtime would be perfect for working out for you since you're already walking during that time anyway (i workout at lunch, too).

if you're going to focus on cardio you can look into the couch to 5k program:

the goal is to finish a 5k or be able to run for 30 minutes straight.

Intermittent fasting will lower ur cholesterol. Try the 5:2 program. There is some good research to back up IF

Don't worry about it. I have the same issues you listed, finally found out after seeing a cardiologist because of my paranoid family doctor and was told I was healthier than people that had low cholesterol.

Following up on what Modelworks said, perhaps you can't bring down your cholesterol to "normal" levels without drugs, but diet and exercise should make you healthier in general and hopefully reduce likelihood of other things such as diabetes and heart disease (and if you smoke, quit now).

Eating a diet of natural and unprocessed foods can't hurt either.

how did he determine this? i am interested because my cholesterol in june was 280 but i am very active and am eating a low-carb diet and feel great. my wife has really low cholesterol, is sedentary and has a bad diet and feels sick often.

Like has been said already, Sunny, fish oil will help. I take 2x 1200mg, twice a day, and it's helped my numbers out enormously. Suggest you try a smaller bottle, to start, and see if you get the fish oil burps (some do, some don't). If you do, some companies make a 'burpless' fish oil, but I imagine it's more expensive. Personally, I just take mine with breakfast & dinner, and only have very infrequent problems with the burps.

If you do end up going on a statin type drug for your cholesterol, you should also look into taking CoQ10 supplements. CoQ10 is found in your body, normally, but statins tend to utilize it more, to help control your cholesterol..... so a supplement will help.

Be prepared, too, to possibly have to try more than one type of cholesterol drug. My doctor tried out Lipitor on me first, and it whacked out not only my cholesterol numbers, but my liver function numbers too! I switched over to Vytorin, and take one of those every other day, and my numbers make my doctor very happy!

Total cholesterol sucks.

If you must (for health insurance) cut fat from your diet overall to get cholesterol down.

To get LDL down, eat less saturated, and trans fat. ESPECIALLY tv dinners, frozen prepared food, and flaky bakery items, like croissants, danishes, super-market cake, etc.

HDL is healthy, to get that up, eat more olive oil, fish oil, soybean oil, etc. in your cooking in place of butter (which isn't that bad for you).
