Just let WU do it on its own. Forcing updates down Vista's throat after a new install can be problematic sometimes. It normally resolves itself over time.

Actually no...full retail.

Vista SP 2 won't install and I'm beyond flustered. I've posted in the right place to get help, this is my pissed off thread.

And $3 is what I figured the DVD and packaging cost them. Including shipping.

Your first mistake was buying the pos that vista is.

And second, your theory of charging for only the shipping and packaging costs would mean every piece of software falls under that theory and makes me sad.

Vista... my lappy came with that on it's original 160gb HDD... I swapped that out for a 750gb, and have been using Win 7 since the days of the pre-beta, beta, and release candidate versions.... then when it came out for the masses, i waited a couple weeks, then got a version off the torrents and have been using it that way ever since...

Josh, eat a cookie and be happy you have a legit copy of Vista, then acquire windows 7, install it and be happy.

I got in on the Feedback Panel deal. I ended up with 2 complete sets of Vista 32 bit and 64 bit mailed to me.
I did a full restore/install on my old P4 Northwood and it runs fine...but my Soundblaster Live card wouldn't work no matter what "workaround" or modded drivers I tried.

I know. Too bad they removed the Win7. Good thing I still have access to all the other ones =)

You're better off pirating windows than buying it IMO. Or at least cracking it when you pay for it. The last time I owned a legitimate copy, I had an activation issue which took about 10 phone calls over the course of 3 weeks to get fixed. And of course, all of the support centers were based in India.

And you think that materials is the bulk of the cost for a software company? I mean, sure, maybe outsourcing programmers saves some money but they aren't free even in India.

Just make sure that you don't go to the Torrents and download any operating system of your choice and/or Office 2010. Remember, don't do this.

Wait, what? The OS is the LAST thing you want to pirate. Can we say "virus"? And not necessarily easy "Ok, I ran norton over it, it should be clean" types of viruses either.

Whats even funnier, you recommend that the OP pirate an os because... He is getting bad customer support? Makes perfect sense, it must be the only solution....

Not to support piracy, but you do know there are ways to check to see if an iso is clean right? w/ 100% confidence

I bought, windows 7 preorder, then got in 4 copies from IEEE, then got 4 more copies from school. through MSDNAA, which are retail but not really... but really are... but not really

Not really, if the ISO has been tampered with IE Cracked, there is no way to verify that it is clean 100%. Custom virus + OS = big trouble. A good virus doesn't show up when you log in, it remains hidden.

Actually just check the hash of the ISO against the known clean ones provided my MS. If they match, you know that the files are identical and the ISO hasn't been modified.

Of course if you're going to run some activation hack or other exploit it could do all kinds of nasty crap to your system, so pirating a clean ISO doesn't necessarily mean you're safe. This is why I tend to just stay away from pirated software, not worth the hassle.

"Hello customer. Please spend $189 for each of your computers for our Operating System. Please note that just because you are spending $600 for a product that has a cost of $3, that does not mean that we are going to treat you well. As a matter of fact, we are going to provide ZERO support for your purchase."
