The F-15 and new F-18E/F are about the same size as the F-14. They're about the same length and about the same weight fully loaded. I've seen the F-18 and F-18E/F at airshows, and those E/Fs are noticeably larger.

I have watched a number of those shows (bombers, fighters, battle tanks, APCs, combat rifles, have helicopters recorded and ready). It's always interesting, and I certainly don't always agree with their choices, but I'm not an expert.

There was also a very interesting program about the F-22 on, I think, the Military Channel. The F-22 development program was started in the 1980s, but after the dominance of the F-15s over the Iraqi Air Force in the first Gulf War, many people started to question whether we really needed $93,000,000-a-pop replacements for the F-15. However, those questions have died away as we have seen the rest of the world rapidly catching up to the F-15, an alarming prospect for a country used to owning the skies.

The F-22 has been a huge success and a gigantic leap in air superiority. Two training scenarios were mentioned on the program: an F-22 vs. four F-16s, and later an F-22 vs. five F-15s (experienced F-22 pilots in the F-16s and F-15s as well). Both were boring for both sides, as the F-22's only concern was running out of ammunition. Try as they might, the older planes could never even detect the F-22. One pilot said the only way you know the F-22 is on the battlefield against you is when you're parachuting out of your plane. He said that when he imagined it being a real fight, it was a very unsettling experience, being up against something so superior that you're not just outclassed, you can't even find it.

The F-15 is currently the deadliest fighter that has seen any serious action, but not because of its airframe, and not for long, with F-22s entering active service. Russia made a huge mistake when they chose to ignore stealth for their next-generation high maneuverability fighter (Su-37?)- the thing is gigantic on visual, radar, infrared, and the Russian budget. Maneuverability has nothing on undetectability, and the Russians are now a long way behind America in air superiority. Hold air superiority in a modern war (as opposed to a police action, counter-insurgency, etc) and the rest is just a matter of time and fighting spirit. Russia surely knows this, and I don't think they have any desire to fight us anytime soon, which is just as well for both sides.

One could argue that the F-15 is less important or less great than the P-51 because it has far fewer kills, it didn't change the course of any world wars, etc., but I think that this misses a large share of the point. American strategy in military technology is (at least in theory) to be so dominant that nobody will test you, as the best weapons tend to be the ones which nobody will challenge. I believe that the F-15 (and its supporting cast, as important as the plane itself) has had even more influence on the world than most people realize.

Didn't you kick their behinds in WW2, against all possible odds?

Or are there current tensions between the two countries that I'm unaware of...?

Technically we lost, but like to think we won . A Russian general said it well: "We barely won enough land to bury our dead."

As to what comes to our current relations. Russia doesnt really respect our or especially Estonias etc. independence and likes to tell us what to do. No immediate threats but like I said earlier who knows in the future. They are certainly becoming more aggressive. I think we should join NATO.

E/F's are less agile than A/B/C/D, and not as great dogfighters as ABCD. But, the E/F's probably has better avionics (sp lol) and such. I thought E/F's are better suited as ground attack planes than A/B/C/D.

I don't think the F-15's were designed to be in tight dogfights. If I remember correctly their ability to turn quickly isn't that great but what it does excel at is speed. It could easily outclimb many of the jets of that era not to mention the advance radar that is able to target and lock on its enemies way farther out. This gave it the advantage of being able to shoot its missiles before the enemy can.

I think the Hornet can probably out turn an Eagle but if the Eagle pilot is good he'll turn it into a vertical fight and that's where he'll have the biggest advantage.

It's my understanding that the F-18 was the first US fighter built specifically for dogfighting.

The Su35/37 can actually dogfight a lot better than say a F-15 D/E/F. EF-2000s and Tornadoes can do quite a bit of damage too.

In a recent training exercise, seven F-22s took on more than fourty F-16s and came out highly victorious. (I can't find the link, but It was recent)

F-22 has a 108:0 kill ratio!

EDIT: Found the link.
During Exercise Northern Edge 2006 in Alaska in early June, the F-22 proved its mettle against as many as 40 "enemy aircraft" during simulated battles. The Raptor achieved a 108-to-zero kill ratio at that exercise. But the capabilities of the F-22 go beyond what it can do. It is also able to help other aircraft do better.

Todays air battles are decidedly not about dogfighting. Air superiority today is all about radar signature and electrocincs installed.

Since the hornet was the more recent aircraft I assume its electronics were more modern than the eagles.

Who knows which radars both planes were capable of? The one with the better radar wins no matter what.

You can put a modern radar and missile on a biplane and it will win against a modern fighter with older radar.

The Strike Eagle radar was stronger than the F18 (up until the Super Hornet - I do not know what that capability is).

The F14 can not accelerate straight up - The Eagle can - what a kick in the pants.

The Eagle can carry more weapons (more hardpoints).

The Eagle can sustain more battle damage and bring the crew home.

As others have stated, it is a combination of the aircraft, crew, weapons and intercept support.

Many of the Russian fighters may look good on paper, however, when/if deployed fail to live up to their design potential due to equipment/crew/logistics.

The same goes with the European aircraft.

Purely for the coolness factor. Swing wings, comeone!
Then look at the Vampire - Well before the F-14

Well being then only one in this thread that has actually worked with the F/A-18C/D Hornets for 10 years with VFA-122 VFA-105 VFA-106 and 2 war cruises under my belt..

I can tell you the Hornet holds its own against everything short of the F-22 (whicth very few peeps have flown against yet anyway)

Ive been to Top Gun at NAS Fallon and Red Flag at Nellis as well as Adversary training in Key West with the Hornet.
Every time we go we do well.
We can stand toe to toe with F-16s F-15s MiG29s (yes we had an excercise with the German Migs) French Mirages, British Tornados, etc etc etc..

Ive been around thw world with this marvelous aircraft 4 times.. and not only is it a work of art in the air.. but also one of the most tech / mech friendly aircraft ever built..

Having worked with the Eagle & flown it for about the same length of time.

Plus worked at Nellis supporting and participating in Red Flag.

both are nice weapons - it just depends on the supporting case to ensure that you get the best performance possible.

As stated, the Eagle is a tougher bird.
