Like most Facebook users I use it to keep in touch with IRL friends, organise parties and meetups etc. And here you are on an anonymous internet forum, not using your real name and interacting with people you'll likely never meet in real life. You're a hypocrite.

I can't wait till this shitty ass Facebook fad is over. I'm sick of people hounding me when they ask for my FB and I tell them I don't have one and never will. They turn into some sort of FB religious freaks and spend a good minute or 2 breaking down everything they believe I'm missing out of in life due to not having one blah blah blah.

1) You have no friends

Facebook is over 5 years old.

it's a little late to call it a "fad"

You have #6. Congratulations.

But see, this is the problem: No one wants information about you. Or anyone else. Or at least, they shouldn't. The fact that they do says volumes about these people's lives.

Whenever I hear "social networking" or whatever buzzword is attached to the current interact-with-people-without-actually-interacting-with-people trend, I always think of this, which is one of the better commentaries I've seen on the whole situation.

Twitter is indeed stupid. Never understood it myself. Just the status portion of facebook (which is about 2% of the site) on crack for people with too much time on their hands.

Facebook is actually useful and convenient. Show me another means by which you can plan an event, invite all of your friends, while simultaneously creating a viewable online RSVP list complete with photos, status, and comments on whether they'll show up late or not. Said page can also have directions, descriptions, and other useful content.

Never mind the fact that most people I know only update their status 3-4 times a day max, and you can filter status updates if you like. Some people go days without a status at all. It's still nice to know what's going on with other people. I actually do care about what other people are doing and am in active contact with most of my "friends". IRL as much as possible.

If it's not your thing fine, but it certainly isn't a fad and isn't going away. If anything it's grown massively and is continuing to grow. It's also been around for over half a decade. I don't see any sign of it stopping.

Yeah, I have a rage issue. Where was any rage in that post? He's just a dick that constantly bitches about how retarded Facebook is. Nobody cares about his opinion. Or mine.

I guess your problem with Facebook is that you don't really have any friends or relatives or that you've friended every person under the sun.

Facebook has given me a chance to develop much closer relationships with my cousins, who I rarely ever see because our parents don't really like each other. It allows me to easily keep in touch with friends halfway around the world and see what their up to without pestering them with emails or phone calls. I can keep tabs on friends without bothering them, which is nice sometimes.

When I do have something to share, Facebook is a great place to do it. See, I know that nobody outside of my friends gives a fuck about photos from my weekend camping, but if I put them on Facebook, all my friends can see them. Posting on Facebook, IMO, is much less intrusive on people's lives than hosting a gallery and sending out massive emails to everyone you know. It just works. I like that.

Updates are probably the single most annoying thing in Facebook, but even those have some value. Most of the people I'm friends with don't constantly update about what they're eating, but they post about local events they're going to or hosting or whatever. Again, Facebook, for me, is an incredible passive information stream. I use what I like, ignore what I don't.

Sure, it's cool to hate all over Facebook, but the truth is that it's a great idea with brilliant execution and, as long as you don't friend every stupid asshole you meet, it's actually pretty fucking useful.

But hey, that's just my opinion, and truthfully, nobody gives a fuck about that, either.

remember when the internet was the real deal and nothing else? If you wanted to meet people or get in touch with people online you would make your own website so your friends could find you. And they would make one too so you could find them.
It didn't work, because only .9% of people online could figure out how to make a website.

it is remarkable how many people ON INTERNET FORUMS (the earliest form of a social network) have such a strong resistance and hatred towards social networking sites.

Didn't you know? Your coolness goes up hundredfold if you hate on popular stuff, regardless of whether or not it has practical use.

In ATOT, it's cool to hate on everything popular.

ATOTers don't social network...
ATOTers don't eat fast food...
ATOTers don't watch popular TV...
ATOTers don't like popular movies...

You're assuming I want to interact with the people on this forum beyond this level. You'd be wrong.

ATOT is kind of an additional internet bullshit entertainment source, like reddit or digg. An amusing diversion for a few minutes a day. An aggregator for inane this n that.

Now, if you called me a shallow wise and beautiful woman based on my entertainment taste, you'd be getting somewhere. But that's just America today.

You know, its not that I'm an elitist or anything. I sure don't want to come off like it, but hear me out.

The only reason I personally don't like it, is because my face and my likeness are plastered all over the place. Everyone can know everything about me and tag me in photos and the like. I just like it when people actually call me or ask me in person about how stuff is going instead of doing it over Facebook. Not to mention, I had a ton of friends on there that I really didn't know very well, if at all, and am unsure why they added me or why I added them.

I understand Facebook has a huge plethora of privacy settings, but its kind of nice not to be plugged into that whole networking scene, so that you can contact people on your own time and people aren't always stalking you out and putting bits and pieces of your life together.

I know all of it is able to be controlled by the user, but if you lock the whole thing up, there isn't a big reason to really have it. Thats just my opinion. I know you all have valid reasons for using it. It is a cool networking site, for sure, but it just simply isn't for me.

lol had friendster and myspace for a while, cancelled those a long time ago, waste of time
if someone wants to get ahold of you, just call ?

same with texting, i don't understand, isn't it easier to call someone than typing out a novel?
of course there's exceptions, like texting directions etc...

IMO it goes back to using tools incorrectly. If I had a sledgehammer and I was try to dig a hole, would you assume that the sledgehammer was useless or that I was an idiot?

Texting sucks for carry on long conversations, but it has huge advantages over calls.

First, someone can respond to a text on their own time, they don't need to set aside time that second to get back to you.

Second, you can text in places you can't call. A buddy of mine lives in San Diego now and when I'm watching the Sox games, we text back and forth about what's going on. It's a lot easier than staying on a phone for three hours and it allows me to head to a bar, watch the game, and still talk with him about the game.

Again, none of this shit is a big deal, but I don't understand why people always blame the tool (facebook, texting) versus the users for using them incorrectly.

Holy crap! Someone that doesn't use Facebook that isn't against it because it's "stupid". I actually enjoy Facebook and how I can further connect with the people I've met in real life. Facebook obviously isn't for everyone, but it can be extremely useful at times.

Ummmm...you are absolutely, completely wrong.

Facebook is now 4th largest site in the world

Facebook grew twice as fast as twitter in July

Need anymore evidence? Facebook isnt going anywhere anytime soon.

Facebook is a fraud anyway. Zukenberg has stolen the code for the site from people who paid him to develop it.

I don't see how the fact that Zuckerburg was hired to develop ConnectU, stole the idea, gave his employers crappier code and then launched his own version takes away from the fact that Facebook is one of the biggest websites on the internet?

I found Facebook interesting and fun back in my freshman year of college when it was "new" and "exclusive" to college students. That way you could track people down in class/dorms, etc. Now with the floodgates being opened and horrendous crap all over people's pages, I don't use it anymore except for private messages.

It's odd how nobody really uses MSN/AIM anymore, and people have changed over.
