Check the link below for piccies on how to identify a fake XP processor. Over-Clock.co.uk (my fave store ) has just recently intercepted some fake XP's - very strange - AND from two suppliers. I wonder what's going on? And is there anything like this going on in the states? Difficult to tell for large outlets such as Neweggs i would guess, but as O-CuK is small, they check and guarentee CPU steppings which is how they found this fakes. Craaaazy!

Ahhh... This takes me back. It was exactly this sort of thing that led to the multiplier-locked Pentiums we enjoy today.

Links dead now, probably the server was getting hammered.

Edit: anyone care to provide more details if there are any beyond the missing label?

>Difficult to tell for large outlets such as Neweggs i would guess,

Not so difficult for distributors or retailers, if they buy from AMD, or check the pedigree with AMD. It is when they buy from "some guy" that the possilbilty arises.

After all, it is not a fake when the original manufacturer decides how far to OC the chip. Or underclock, as the case may be.

So I guess somebody is zapping the bridges to something more profitable. I imagine if could be done to look about the same, with professionalism and similar lasers. The things ordinary people do can be easily spotted visually.

AMD has never minded that their CPUs might be redone, as long as there is not the slightest hint that they were AMD originals. AMD has had a similar possiblity from the very first slot A Athlons. It has been enough for AMD that counterfeits can be readily spotted, and they have chosen to let the end user do as he pleases.

Intel has had the additional difficulty that their lowest priced processors are heavily underclocked. The writing on the CPU saying what it was supposed to be was almost a joke, and couldn't restrict the market enough to satisfy Intel's marketing experts.

The AT onslought (sp?) coupled with HardOCP killed the site. HardOCP really needs to be more reponsible when they post liks to smallish sites like that, or at least give some warning.

Uh? Right okay... Everytime someone posts a link they should make sure the other end has a good server to meet the demand.

Just spoke to Hantai our server god, and that it was in fact our hosters going mental - not a bandwidth problem or anything. We are in the process of moving over to a new server box to rectify some lingering problems, mainly email related. It looks like the site/store/forums are ok now.

AMD confirms dud Athlon XPs about

Warns of buying from dud sources

By INQUIRER staff: Thursday 18 September 2003, 15:13

A FEW WEEKS ago we pointed to pictures of fake and genuine Athlon XP2400+ on www.over-clock.co.uk.
AMD has now confirmed that the picture of a dud chip is genuine, that is to say it is genuinely dud, and has also issued a warning to people buying microprocessors.

A person from AMD says on the site today that he has examined the chip and it has been modified by someone after it left the factory.

AMD also warns that buying chips from unauthorised sources carries the risk that products may have been tampered or remarked, and have no warranty.

You can find the updated page, here. µ

* MEANWHILE AMD said that it H&R Block will standardise on HP D325s, which use Athlon XPs. Deployment of more than 15,000 machines begins in early October
