Saber rattling by Venezuela. I was in the Malvinas about three years ago and wondered why anyone would care about that place. Everything is flown in and the land has few uses.

Wonder if someone thinks theres oil there.

Hugo Chavez has hosed his people over so completely that he's looking for something, anything to get their minds off his screwing up.

Yup, there's oil in the territorial waters nearby. Nothing's going to come of it, though. Argentina isn't dumb enough to try that again.

Seriously, a destroyer is the most powerful ship in the Royal Navy? WTF happened to them?

----
The Royal Navy also announced last week it was sending its most powerful warship, HMS Dauntless, to the South Pacific.

Size is a lot less important than it used to be. No navy in the world has a battleship among its fleet.

I don't disagree and it's a fantastic AA ship. However, you're not going to project power or control the sea lanes with a couple destroyers. It has direct control over what - 7,500 square miles at the very best?

Would NATO assist England?

(Not that England needs any help.)

As far as I am concerned, a tempest in a tea pot that picks at the scabs of ill healed wounds.

Of all of the Gin joint countries to post British Price Charles or is it Phillip, never cared to keep both names straight, the South American region is about the diplomatically worst region Queen Elizabeth the second could have chosen to post her second grandchild.

Brilliant simply Brilliant inspired stupidity. How to alienate a whole continent while not reaping an iota of political gain.

They have a few of them at least and they have a pretty decent submarine fleet. Like I said they will have two new Carriers by about 2020. Much improved over their old ones.

But in the meantime they seriously lack the ability to project naval power.

They have nuclear powered subs armed with tomahawks, one might be patrolling the south Atlantic right now

Argentina would have to be stupid as hell to start something else again. Falklands is in the middle of nowhere but England has proven that their greatly diminished empire still means something to them. There's no way anybody is taking this from them as they still possess one of the best navies and air forces in the world, and it's land already inhabited by them. There will be no FW2. Argentina should consider themselves lucky they even took out one ship last time.

The Malvinas are not in the middle of nowhere. They're not even 300 miles away from Argentina.

The UK could barely even project force in Libya, they would probably have a much more difficult time with the Malvinas now than they did in the 80s. I'm not sure if Argentina would be able to take back their territory as of yet, but it will probably be inevitable.

The UK has no legitimate claim to those Islands.

Those islands were apparently uninhabited when settled by British settlers in the 1850's. Argentina claim otherwise.

Either way the current inhabitants all want to remain British.

Southern Argentina is definitely the middle of nowhere.

England's interest in Libya is not comparable to it defending what it considers its own territory. The smack down would be hard and fast, and if there was any doubt about it at all the US would lend England a carrier fleet to assist.
