is it just me or is lockpicking even with a high skill inconsistent?

for example, i'll pick a master lock no problem but a novice lock i'll break 3 picks, sometimes by just barely moving the pick!

I think picks have "health" which means if you damage one a lot in a prior pick attempt and t hen start to pick something different you'll start with the last damaged pick and can snap it instantly.

Where you start is more or less dumb luck so how many picks you use to pick a lock will vary, I mean I've picked master locks where I've just luckily picked the exact sweet spot first time in which case I don't even damage the pick it just flys open, that's rare though.

If you through dumb luck start far from the sweet spot and attempt to pick and keep missing it then you'll likely break several picks on hard locks, on average across lots of different locks the harder ones will take more picks.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you've taken off vsync and the game is running at a high frame rate then the machnics for lock picking are speeded up with your frame rate and it becomes nigh on impossible to pick the hard locks as the lockpicks snap instantly, so if you're finding picking hard just double check that vsync is on.

wtf, i just fast traveled to a place and while the screen was still black i hear a mine beeping and as the game loads in it explodes right under me....

rofl! see--clearly something going on with random mine spawning. ...Or raiders have just gotten sneakier by placing mines on fast travel nodes.

I get the weapon problem as well. I select a weapon and...nothing. I find if you wait for 5 seconds it will appear but there's a lag. It only started happening about 20 hours in so not sure what happened, and it doesn't happen all the time. Maybe 20% of the time which is still annoying.

Probably the most annoying bug for me, as well. I find that if you tap trigger--left mouse button-it pops into your hand without firing off a round.

Did not know that about pick health. Normally i don't have much trouble.

About the mines - i have seen at least once where i didnt find it in time and it killed me but when i reloaded the mine was not there.

Actually when i reloaded from that fast travel disaster, i picked a different fast travel location nearby and it spawned me in almost the same exact place and there was a mine close by but not close enough to set it off.

I have seen that too. Seems to be something funky with save state. I have also had roughly the same thing happen with equipped weapons and once an entire super mutant patrol.

So I finished the main story... sided with BoS. Man, those guys remind me of the old BoS - fanatics and zealots without much reason. I was really appalled at the end with them, but just wanted to finish things. They really sound like a church - destroy what you don't understand or fear. I think I'm gonna start over now, without using PA, just guns (or maybe melee focused?) and stick with the Institute.

Slightly off topic, but new official Crimson drivers out for AMD video cards, http://support.amd.com/en-us/download , anybody tried these yet with Fallout 4?

Update: I've installed them so will report back later on how they are with Fallout 4.

Yeah I'm guessing it was done to supply you with xp and loot for building settlements or messing with guns\armor.
I caved in and bought a GTX970, upgraded from an old (but still kicking) HD7850. Wow!

the 970 has held its value well. I bought mine a year ago and its still selling for same price.

I dont have an amd card but apparently they seem to be messing up the Compass and/or the PipBoy screen. Just from random reading on reddit

I had a few issues with them, did a clean install of them, my old CCC panel disappeared, others have stated it is still there via display section on Crimson panel via advanced settings,(even Anandtech's review states it's supposed to be there).

I need it to check saturation level and pixel format etc..

I had a weird issue in Fallout 4 ie trying to put a picture on the wall and it kept zooming in and out high speed so was hard to get it on the wall in right place, in the end I removed the drivers and went to the 15.11 beta ones.

UPDATE: I did a Crimson driver install over the top this time(rather then a clean install I did last time) and it's working fine now, figure that one out lol , Fallout 4 working fine as well, not had any issues so far.

I played maybe 22 hrs worth, mostly doing a lot of side missions with the Minute Men and such. Can you play as a raider or gunner?

steal their gear, dress up, you are not a raider or gunner?

Or you mean some sort of side-missions that let you join their faction?

no, those are always the default "bad guys" in these games.

Well, understandable as they're without a technological competitor at this time. AMD's cards suck twice as much power to get that performance - in my case, for example, I'd have to upgrade the PSU as well to use the 390.

I was really pissed with the BoS. As soon as I got the talk from, uh, Maxson? I figured these aren't the good guys I wanted to side with. Obvious hint was when Piper yells "WHAT DID YOU SAY?!" when you even nod in agreement to something they say.

BTW, If you prefer Dogmeat to the rather emo companions, remember to take Lone Wanderer - he doesn't count so you get the bonus.

That's lead to so many reloads for me. I change guns in the middle of a shootout, the gun doesn't change or disappears, I end up losing a lot of health before it does show up. Sometimes the gun shoots but the animation/gun isn't drawn.

I think mines and traps are tied to the map/area load up. I've been blown up by mines/traps, reloaded, and then found that they weren't around anymore. Fast travelling out of the area and coming back resets the mines/traps.

The game loads a lot quicker if you're in the same map area, so it probably loads the map, then your character/quest stuff.

Loving the game as well!

I've encountered a few glitches though like others. Here is my list of glitches:

1) Weapon doesn't always come back out after using a hacking terminal, lock picking, or entering dialog. Usually swapping weapons and trying to fire the new one will force it to come back out at least so it hasn't been game breaking

2) Outpost Zimonja has a ladder you can't get rid of. Not even with PC console commands can you get rid of it. So you have this ladder stuck in a spot that really is annoying.

3) Several times I've "cleared" an area then saved. For some reason I had to reload the save and find the area with a few random left over enemies that shouldn't have been there anymore. Good example was Outpost Zimonja again. I cleared it. Saved, and started making a settlement. Accidentally made the wrong item so I reloaded to get back my materials I used. When I reload a couple more raiders are standing right in front of my face and start to attack. This is despite the map showing it cleared and I was able to use the workshop to start making a new settlement there. This has happened in other places too.

4) Missing heads. I think this is a texture overlay problem with too many things, but several times while trying to line up a snipe shot the target's head just poofs in my scope. Ugh.

5) Figured out the funny dogmeat dupe most items bug. Fun I guess. Not that I couldn't just spawn stuff from the console if it really mattered to me.

6) You can build floating weapon platforms in settlements and I do it all the time. Create a ladder on the ground. Climb up and place a floor or another ladder to snap to the top of the ladder. Place whatever weapon you want as high as you want and then remove the ladders. Everything up top stays. So you can have floating weapon platforms to defend your settlements with good lines of fire from a high vantage point without having to use too many materials or waste settlement "size" limits.

7) Don't make the John Hancock a companion until you do his non companion questline first. Otherwise you can do it.

8) Few floating items found here in there. For example Vault 75 has a dirty water item floating in the middle of a hallway.

I think there were a few more cosmetic bugs, but don't remember them off hand. The two bigger bugs I've seen is the broken Jon Hancock quest line and the stuck ladder in Zimonja. The disappearing heads can be annoying when lining p a shot, but I think it has only happened 3 times or so.

Finished it for the most part. Explored nearly the entire map I believe and done with the storyline. The game was decent, definitely worth the money, albeit shallow in some respects.

It inspired me to reinstall FNV and mod it extensively for graphics and bug fixes. Now that I'm several hours into it, it's a reminder that FNV is the best of 3,FNV & 4. Story is so much better and the world has a lot more character.

It would be awesome to see Obsidian do a New Vegas style release with the FO4 engine

I've way too much to do storyline wise, still building settler camps etc, really taking my time since I want to be playing into next year.

I've no other important games to play at the moment.

How many hours did you clock in?

I'm over 70 hours and only done exploring everything north of the river, outside the city.

I'm mighty glad you mentioned that! You can still load Dogmeat up with all the crap you pick up for crafting AND get the perk... sold!

...yeah... I couldn't resist the crafting stuff. Though I think I'll stick to just improving home, rather than managing several settlements.

Hey - any way to move mama Odie's (?) chair after you've crafted it? I stuck it in the wrong house and I can't move it after she's plopped her butt down and tripped out in it.

Steam says 90 hours, but I'm sure I've left the game open for at least 5+ hours several times when I wasn't using the computer.

I didn't do anything settlement wise in the game apart from a little bit at Sanctuary.

I’ve received more emails, comments and tweets regarding Trade Routes than anything else—so I made a video guide explaining them. Requirements, assigning a settler and canceling a trade route. Short & sweet, located here:

Hope it helps!
