Hmm, this is disappointing.

The Jamaica Plains settlement turned out to be much smaller than I thought. Was hoping to make it my new home base.

Looks like I will just go ahead and start building at the drive in theater instead. Its a good spot. Loads of open ground. I plan to make an apartment complex there. Maybe give a whole floor to my power armor.
:awe:

Have you discovered Spectacle Island yet? I believe it has the largest settlement area, it's huge. However not as flat as the drive-in and I'm not sure if you can send caravans to it since it's surrounded by water. People will come to it though through the recruitment beacon.

Problem is settlement "size" is a massive limiting problem as the game has set really small sizes for most settlements. Sanctuary is the biggest the game allows that I know of. Starlight drive in theater has a nice big flat area, and one of the few places you can put a couple of those huge water purifiers, but the size limitation prevents you from doing much there. You could also download one of the mods that increases that size limit or removes it completely. But then you have to worry if your comp can handle it without crashing.

If doing mods, I do suggest the extra building mod pack on Nexus though. It allows you to build with other game world pieces beyond the current junk we normally have access to. This means stuff like barb wire topped walls and other cool looking stuff. They also tend to work better building wise as they don't auto snap and tend to work with the ground better where there is elevation I have found.

I keep trying to take on raider and super mutant camps without power armor... so much food consumed to get through!

No excuse... I've found dozens of power thingies for the suit... just keep forgetting to run back home to get it!

You dont need power armor, just a powerful sniper rifle and fight at range, or get get a powerful combat rifle. I'm really digging the combat rifle and combat shotgun. Upgraded the receivers, and now I feel a bit OP. I havent used my power armor since the mission you get it. I have been upgrading the armor on it, but like in real life I'm cheap, so I'm saving cores in case I need to use it later.

BTW, dont forget to find the Cheers easter egg!

Finally got something good.
Killed a legendary bloodbug with just my crustacean-killer combat knife.

He gave me a radiated deathclaw gauntlet!

The glowing sea answered my question about how boston survived a nuclear blast - the hit was simply outside the city. Man, what a desolate place...

Awesome! Had to have one so I followed your link and picked up eight tees at $6 each. That's an incredible deal.

Pretty small patch, actually. I'd say it's been a good launch for the team so far.
Incredibly good. In 76 hours I have had exactly one CTD. My most common bugs have been my weapon disappearing, so that I can't tell if it's drawn without firing, and losing the ability to open the trade dialog with Nick. Also had one amusing bug where the BoS paladin is about to lead me on a mission and after finishing his monologue, his head disappears several seconds before he dons his helmet. And at one point, Nick utterly disappeared and exiting the game did not fix it. It took recruiting Dogmeat and sending Nick to Sanctuary, at which point I could hear but not see him. After that I shut down all fallout and Steam executables, then restarted both and I could once again see and re-recruit him. I'm attempting to finish Nick's quest before returning to the BoS quest since I'm assuming I won't be allowed a companion or quest freedom for that story arc.

That's because you aren't changing their type from pistol to rifle. I know that laser weapons and pipe guns can change from pistol to rifle just with the stock; I'm not sure if it works that way with other weapons because I haven't tested it. Specifically, I'm not sure if the pistol-grip double barreled shotgun counts as a pistol or not. I know the full stock version counts as a rifle for perks.
Well . . . These ARE the same devs who believe a gun is most deadly when used as a club. Against that, a short-barreled pistol-gripped rifle versus a long-barreled full-stocked pistol firing the same round kinda makes sense.

I will say that the game is quite deadly on survival mode. Mirelurks are virtually indestructible, so it's a game of leading them backward and waiting for periodic shots to the face. Mirelurk hunters pretty much are indestructible unless you can engage with a healthy range, preferably from a second floor. The mission where you retrieve the desired item and are faced with two at close quarters without any other route of retreat had me die so many times I reverted to god mode. The first ran over two bottlecap mines and six frag mines with me shooting at him all the time with barely a notch in his health bar, and behind him was a second, whereas I took one faceful of acid and died; even though I immediately backed around the corner, my health just dropped like a rock. Unfortunately I have not yet been able to make a joystick button function as a grenade/bash key so I can't grenade/mine spam them without dying in the attempt as I use my joystick to move and fire and my trackball to aim, but that's such a weird style of control I can't fault them for not better supporting it.

Depends how much you explore and look for safes and locked areas, if you just blow through the game blowing heads up and generally not exploring much or very carefully then they wont be as much use. I level these 2 things up first above anything but I also scour the "dungeons" and general landscape for all the hidden goodies, sometimes they're hard to spot under beds and behind cabinets and things, but you can get some really nice loot especially good for guns with rare ammo and rare components.

Good to get early so that you don't have to revisit cleared dungeons to get loot you missed first time.
Not sure if it's a bug but areas I've cleared are resetting and even more bizarrely, so are bodies I've killed and looted. Thus Wolfgang and sidekick are down to their underwear and sans heads, but their bodies still have their original equipment after three days goes by.

Maybe when you're low level and haven't explored much yet. I am a hoarder and have looted every dungeon north of the river from the west to the sea. Sold most of my loot for more ammo. All my guns use different ammo types, and I haven't used an energy weapon for something like over a dozen levels so have accumulated a lot.

On another note, I miss karma.

And what are these 7 murders I have under my stats? I'm almost sure I haven't murdered any innocents yet. I've even stupidly walked up to Raiders just to be sure they were hostile and let them shoot first.
lol Yeah, me too. I can't tell for sure if someone is a bad guy and often they'll let you walk right up in power armor before turning hostile.

Sniping with the bolt actions actually feels pretty good. Just be sure to steady yourself first. Its not uncommon for me to take out like 4 super mutants in 10 sec all with headshots.
That's something I've not been able to accomplish via joystick button, so I've got to load a mod that removes that awful swaying. My video game character should not be worse at holding on a target than am I.

Fallout was a step forward, a step towards a new direction. Fallout 3 was a step backward, a step in the direction of what Fallout tried to avoid. The first elder scrolls came out in 94 and Fallout 1 came out in 97. Yes, Fallout was a spiritual successor of Wastelend, from 87, but Arena was the spiritual successor of Wizardry! And that came out in 1981!

What are you on about?

I kinda get what he's saying.

I prefer Fallout 1 and Baldurs Gate 2 and games that prioritized substance over form.
Having said that, Fallout 3 actually was enjoyable, even if it deviated from the previous titles. New Vegas was even more fun.
Fallout 4 seems to be missing something special, and its not as good an overall experience. I enjoyed it, but I wont be going back for multiple replays.

Just because something is newer does not mean its better.

Not necessarily, but the preponderance of shooters even among RPGs shows that most gamers find games like Fallout 4 superior to games like Fallout 1. Certainly both styles have their adherents and their current examples, but the market finds the Fallout 4 style to be more popular.

Full disclosure, I was an early addict of Wolfenstein and Doom and Hexxen, so it's no surprise that I find Fallout 1 to be utterly unplayable. I went directly from Rogue to 3D shooters (well, faux 3D at the time) and never looked back, so I never tried Fallout back in the day and now cannot get far enough past the mechanics and graphics to get any warmth for the story.

Anyone know the best location to try and find a combat shotgun? Gf and I switch playing and while I'm a few levels higher and have had one for awhile, she is still stuck with the double-barrel. I can't remember where I found mine now. We've check the skylanes flight and around College square, so at this point I'm thinking just random luck.

I played about 6 hours over the weekend (was moving to a new place so I was busy) but I swear I found and sold/scrapped 3 or 4 combat shotguns. I'm at level 29.

Yeah I have scrapped several of these in the last couple days, seemed to find more of them when I passed lvl 14. Found a couple last night, I think in the
super-mutant camp at Revere Satellite Array

yes i have perks in gunslinger but not rifleman, but i don't notice this drastic change on other weapons I mod.

That's odd then. Not sure why that would be the case. If Bethesda had released the G.E.C.K at launch, we might have been able to see why.

The way the main quest plays out is kinda weird. Am I supposed to pick a faction before I finish the main quest? I thought it would be like Skyrim where you have the main quest then after you finish you can do the mage/thieves/dark brotherhood stuff separately. I'm at some mission for the institute that says doing it will make me an enemy of the BoS, but I haven't even done anything for BoS yet.

Protip: whenever you get out of power armor take your fusion core out!! I had a courser companion for one of the institute missions hop in and steal full T60d armor and now i can't get it back ever.

Has anyone done the Battle for Bunker Hill? I think mine bugged out.

When I got to the location there was a huge battle - BoS vs Institute vs Railroad. Everyone ignored me and I just walked right through except for killing a few turrets. Then I find the 4 synths at the end and the game tells me to 'take care of them' which I have no idea what that means so I kill them all. Then my institute companion turns on me and and I kill him. But somehow I'm still in the institute's good grades. wtf

Don't think its a spoiler but
until you do the quest that says "This action will make an enemy of x faction", you can do quests for all 4 factions. I did Minutemen and it was a little confusing in how to get the end game quests to kick off.

Battle for Bunker Hill was a 3 way battle for me too but you can pretty much walk through and decide which faction you want to help if any. For the Institute, you're supposed to use the reset codes and the courser teleports back with them. I killed my courser right away and then told the 4 they were free to go but they still appeared as objectives until I spoke to Father. Even if you mess up that quest for the Institue, I believe you can explain your actions to Father and still continue with Institute if you wish.

I couldn't initiate the end game quests for the Minutemen until I got myself kicked out of the Institute. I did that after the Battle of Bunker Hill when I explained to Father he was crazy. Alternatively, you can get kicked out by attacking/killing Father/Institute Scientists while at the Institute

Yeah I find several of them, but also many levels above her. Perhaps she just needs to hit lvl 14 or something (think 13 right now). None of those locations listed would be easy for her to get to though, partly due to her skill and also due to lack of decent weapons.
