why are people pre-ordering. There no benefit except for getting conned by more developers.
Because people know what to expect from Bethesda: a buggy, yet fun to play, open world RPG that speaks to the hoarder in us all.

Also, Steam allows refunds within the first two weeks, so if you pre-order there, there is literally zero risk.

Conned how? I know whether I'll like a game or not literally months before it releases. There's no downside to pre-ordering a game I know I'm gonna play and enjoy. There is enough info out there prior to a game's release, especially major games, to make an informed decision.

The problem with ordering a physical copy like me is the lack of preload. I will probably only get it on release day. Ah well.

Or like a game a while back... think it was a CoD or something, that it was a disc with the steam installer and it still had to download it

Edit --- Oh and not that it needs anymore hype but the launch trailer is out

Now the only thing about it that, and its probably just the trailer, some of the voice work and the characters talking are out of sync / looks like a puppet talking, jaw only moves up and down

No one tell him about the ability to buy the season pass for dlc that's not even been looked at yet.

Just buy the game when it comes out, your money isn't going anywhere, is it? The only possible reason I can think to do otherwise is for the pre-download just in case the distributor botches the release day like Blizzard did with D3.

So, is the game over hyped? Or will it deliver?

The installation file itself is 23.8GB. When installed, likely 100GB. With DLC, thinking 2.5TB.

Since the majority of the volume comes from textures, audio and maybe video, you are not going to triple the install size since they don't really compress. If it's 23.8GB, it will be just a little larger installed.

Some retailers do have discounts. GMG usually has some offer going on. IIRC, amazon had it for $50 for prime members. I preodered FO4 from dell using a $25 credit I got when preordering MGSV and will get another $25 credit from them.

I think most people pre-order because they have a good sense already if they're going to like the game and what to expect based off of a company's track record. Based off of Elder Scrolls 4/5 and Fallout 3 I have a good idea what to expect from Fallout 4. I'm almost certain I'll enjoy the game probably more than the previous ones and can live with the expected bugs for the first few months.

Not so bad for a modern title.

[Deletes a few things.]

If I recall correctly my Skyrim folder reached around 40GB (or more) after I had the highest number of mods installed (of course the HD textures were the biggest additions). I can definitely imagine the same happening with Fallout 4 at some point. Interestingly, however, Skyrim is the only Bethesda game for which I desperately searched HD textures for. I modded Fallout 3, but most of the textures I downloaded for it were limited specifically for weapons and clothing HD textures (well not just 'HD', but entirely new ones).

Anyway, for a default size of about 24GB for Fallout 4 it seems standard enough. I do have the feeling that Bethesda will also release their own official HD textures pack for it, just like they did for Skyrim.

Given how horrendously buggy the series has been, I am anticipating it being really bad at launch... especially on the PC. Playing it 6-12 months from now would give a much better experience.

Xbox One is 28GB if I recall. And that's with a lot of textures etc removed. But on the other hand less compression or uncompressed due to the weak CPU.

Its nice to see a company that just doesn't make a direct port.

Eh, next time a major release comes out that I want, I'll buy it with the Season pass. I will want the DLCs to complete the game and have the complete game available to me. At this point, I just consider a game to cost more than $60. But I also buy and play very few games.

Shh, no one tell anyone we were paying $60 per game for snes carts... in 1993.

dumb question....

For Fallout 4...is it recommended to play any of the recent Fallout games?

The last I played was fallout 1 and 2 way back in the day...

Thanks for any input

Fallout 3 had a pretty pointless story so I don't think so.

I recommend playing New Vegas though because it is closer to a true sequel for FO1 and 2 and has great writing, but I have no doubt it will have no relevancy to FO4 since it wasn't made by Bethesda.

If you want to practice the first person system (VATS) then it looks like 4 builds of off 3 and NV, so you could play those of you like to get experience with the gameplay. I'd recommend sticking just to NV though since you probably can't beat both games before 4 is out.

If you're asking "is it important to play Fallout 3 or New Vegas before 4", I am almost certain the answer is no. It's too early to say for certain, of course, but based on what we've seen so far, it's very likely you'll be fine. It may call out events from 3, since is somewhat nearby (Boston vs. Washington DC), and it'll probably reference Fallout 1 and 2 events the way Fallout 3 and New Vegas did, but it's likely you'd be fine with no previous Fallout experience at all.

If you're asking "is it worthwhile," absolutely. Though I'd say it's probably wisest to play Fallout 3 before New Vegas, because there are systematic things that improved. In particular, the weapon variety weapon up tremendously, and New Vegas handles things like Speech checks in a much better fashion. You can fix some, but not all, of those things with mods, but it's better just to play the earlier game first so it doesn't feel like a step back.

It's possible the same is true of 3 and New Vegas vs. 4. The trailers for 4 talk about the new crafting system, for example. 3 had very rudimentary crafting, New Vegas added things like weapon mods but still much of it didn't work that well (i.e. most cooking). You might enjoy 3 and New Vegas more if you played them before 4.

Systems aside, the two games offer different experiences. Fallout 3 is much more of an open world, with less imposed structure. There are so many ruins in the DC wasteland with their own little stories to tell, many of which aren't related to any quest. New Vegas arguably has the better main quest storyline, with a somewhat branching structure since you can align yourself with one of several factions. Though the faction alignment's not that important, since you can do pretty much everything up until almost the end.
