There is a lot of positive feedback about the game on this forum, but outside of it, a lot of gamers are pretty disappointed. User reviews are mostly commenting on how the game is just a generic shooter, not a real RPG, that choices hardly matter, side-quests/fetch quests are pointless and there is no deep story or character development, abysmal writing, dialogue wheel, and outdated graphics and animations for a 2015 AAA game:

And some people thought this might get GOTY over TW3.
This game is hurting my gtx660.
Most of that is more or less true. The writing is poor, the dialogue wheel is just retarded to be honest, it is just odd and makes your character schizo - you are either polite or go all bitchy (and the main male character's voice is porno odd). Its not so much a deep story (partially) its just that nothing really matters. It doesn't have heft. Go henceforth and get your kidnapped son which is Cliche #1. Its the same thing with Elder Scrolls, sure you can explore and its interesting for a bit but after a stack of hours you will likely move on to Just Cause III or the new Deus Ex next year and forget all about it.
Basically, its OK but other devs would do it way better. Its not jumping up and down GOTY good. Just OK. The text tidbits and holotapes are nice though.
Has anyone gotten to the mission to clear raiders out of the corvega assembly facility? It basically murdered my framerate. First time I've ever had to turn a game off because it was making me physically ill.
Well found my first major bug...... lockpicking does not show up.
Seems to affect anyone with 4:3 or 5:4 monitors...... well that sucks
Im running 5:4 and none of the fixes seem to work, its like they completely forgot these style monitors
There's a fix for that here - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=551069501&tscn=1447077828
And the whole game speed locked to frame rate is just part of the engine they're using, all the games using this engine have had issues with speed and sync when going over the fixed 60fps.
I pretty much agree with everything you've said. Haha, yeah that dang Dog is pretty damn annoying so far (gets in the way). I haven't done a ton of combat with him, but he took on two Raiders before I could get to them and he nearly died (this is in Concord,Impressions from four hours of play this evening. TL;DR ... I'm loving the game, it has Fallout cred and atmosphere in spades, it looks great and runs smoothly, and for the most part the UI is an improvement.
So, I don't know what the haters are on about in those reviews linked earlier. As far as I'm concerned the game looks great. It has tons of atmosphere, the lighting and shadows, texture and tone are all really well done. I was just playing Fallout 3 over the last two weeks unmodded so I have fresh impressions of that game, and people who say FO4 doesn't improve on it or NV are nuts. In terms of the texturing and effects it's a significant improvement over unmodded Skyrim imo, especially in the rocks, ground textures, really just all around. There's none, or very little, of that out of place shinyness that characterized a lot of the materials in Skyrim out of the box. Everything looks very matte and weathered and realistic to me.
I'm _loving_ the new loot system. So much less intrusive. I thought I would miss opening containers but guess what... I don't miss opening containers.
Combat... only engaged in a little of it against some bugs. It's basically Fallout combat. Works for me, and fighting has never been the main selling point for me anyway.
Crafting/modding. This is awesome. Just from picking up crap on my way out of the vault I was able to add a glowy sight and a couple of other mods to my 10mm. I can see this is going to be a fun aspect.
The dog... annoying as shit. He got in the way in FO3 but wasn't anywhere near the annoying twit he already appears to be in this game, and he's only been with me about five minutes. In FO3 he was a monster in combat and well worth keeping around. We'll see about this guy.
Wall-O-perks ... not liking this at all. It's not going to make or break the game for me, and maybe I'll dig it more after I actually figure it out. As best I can tell... at each level you can either increase a SPECIAL stat or choose an unlocked perk? Anyway we'll see about this too.
The Pip Boy light works! The Pip Boy light works! The Pip Boy light works!
You can store stuff in crafting stations... awesome.
So with respect to the RPG aspects of the game that some reviewers have been dinging it for I can't tell yet. Seems to me like all the pieces are there, but naturally dumbed down a little which seems to happen with every new iteration. Judgement reserved.
As for the size of the world, also can't tell yet since I haven't even made Concord. Anyone know how the map size overall compares to NV? Anyway, this is Boston, and if you know Boston you know it's all hills and streams and very compact and dense. You're not going to get the sweeping vistas of NV or even FO3, since DC is also pretty flat. I suspect that is mostly what is throwing people on this question.
Overall I am quite happy with the first few hours. Well done, Bethesda.
That's my understanding too. I never had a problem with the previous Perk system but I'm approaching this one with an open mind. Like you said... we'll see.As best I can tell... at each level you can either increase a SPECIAL stat or choose an unlocked perk? Anyway we'll see about this too.
Loving it so far, very atmospheric and runs great. I even found a way to get rid of the mutt....I hate dogs.

Damn, lovin the game so far. I've got 5.4 hours in so far. Just got the PA last night and met that Deathclaw guy but it was super late so I saved and went to bed rather than taking him on.
There are tons of people who had already decided the game sucks before it was released, because it's built on the Creation Engine or by Bethesda or both. Having already made up their minds, they can get their reviews in early. There is a lot of positive feedback about the game on this forum, but outside of it, a lot of gamers are pretty disappointed. I played both with mods to make combat much more deadly and thus the companions died quite easily except for Fawkes - he never died, even once. You could make them unkillable, which made them fall unconscious and awaken fully healed, using the console. You could also resurrect them, but often that broke the scripting and it restored their initial kit.Heh, same. howeverwith the raider mob appearance and defense of Concord after getting the armor, the dog took on that Deathclaw like a boss. It was strange. He seems inappropriately tanky?
Though I noticed that instead of dying, the message "Dog needs assistance!" pops up and it just sits there wounded and loses all enemy aggro. Kinda like companions in TES. Was it like this with followers in FO3 and NV? I rarely used them, tbh, and don't recall this behavior. I want to say that they died very easily.
about 5 hours in for me and I haven't really left Sanctuary. Too busy trying to build a fortress.after the escort mission
Overall, I think the game does look pretty good though textures are certainly dated. Hopefully a Hi Res pack or community mods appear soon. The character models are really quite bad--though certainly an improvement over previous, they do have that plasticy look. The hair is generally quite awful.
How?
BTW, about 5hrs in and I'm liking it more and more. Only one bug so far on the XB1 version. The load times are a little annoying since I'm used to the PC version, but other than that I have no real complaints.
