How would you describe the game..

Shooter?
RPG?
BOTH?

I started playing and all the QUESTIONS get on my nerves...does game play actually DIFFER much based on your answers?

Thanks!

Fallout 3 is an RPG with guns, most people do most of their shooting/melee in the almost turn-based VATS targeting. Firing guns in real-time is done as a last resort.

Fallout New Vegas adds iron sights and scopes, along with large damage bonuses for sneak attacks, and is still an RPG but with much more real-time shooting. It's a little closer to Mass Effect.

FPS, but there's many situations where the gunfire and other hazards come at you at such a rapid pace, you have to use generally RPG elements to overcome them. That's just the gunplay though, the game is thoroughly an RPG in the story/advancement elements.

I use real-time shooting for long-distance and use VATS when enemies get too close to aim properly or when I'm just too lazy and they're close enough. Then again, I play as a sneaking sniper, so I need to make every shot count.

But yes, it is much more RPG than it is shooter. I rarely use my FPS skills when playing. Occasionally I'll make a quick snap shot but it's not necessary with VATS around.

Depends on which Fallout we're talking about. Fallout 1-2 were RPGs in the fullest aspect. Fallout 3 and NV are kind of RPG with silly FPS elements.

Fallout is a 3D isometric real time RPG with turn based combat system.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas have been described above.

Fallout 3 is an RPG
Fallout: New Vegas is more similar to Deus Ex, it has FPS elements, but they are tied to RPG elements. You can play the entire game run and gun though, never using VATS.

I like FallOut Vegas.. I started FO3, but never got into it. Vegas makes me want to give it another look.

It's kind of buggy, but w/e. Not enough for me to not play it.

Yes, it's very RPG'ish. It has FPS elements to it, but I've had nights where I've played for several hours and never fired my gun.

I'm lvl 23 now with 35 hours of play time. Lvl cap is 30.

It's definitely NOT a shooter. It's a watered down RPG with some shooting elements.

This. Its nothing like the original games or any classic RPG. But amazingly, I still had fun.
Not quite as much fun as a really well made shooter like Far Cry, but its entertaining.

I play it mostly as an FPS, only use VATs on more difficult opponents/Situations, do very little Crafting mainly just Recycling Ammo. Crafting is only really necessary early on, which ironically is also when your ability to Craft is severely limited, or perhaps if you rush through the Main Storyline. Myself, I explore everywhere, Loot every Desk/File Cabinet/toolbox/Body/etc, do as many Quests as possible, and because of that I have so much stuff that I've got stashes of Mines, Doctor Bags, Weapons, and all kinds of other things at various places and in my Companions. So much stuff that once in awhile when trying to offload more onto a companion I'll find something awesome, like 2 Sniper Rifles for Repairing :awe:.

The game's(3 and NV) are a ton of fun.

When I start a new game I give myself 3 copies of each schematic. It seems like cheating, but the problem is by the time I actually earn 3 copies of each schematic, I dont give a darn anymore. I cant make anything thats needed to replace all my good equipment. Except for the death claws. Those are by far the best melee weapon unless theres something in the expansion packs I dont know about.

I usually ditch my Melee weapons fairly early on. Might keep a low weight one for certain critters, like Radroaches, just to save Ammo and Weapon wear.

Yea I've only held onto a Lead Pipe for melee. It's about 38dps and cheap to repair

3 schematics aren't actually necessary on anything but Nuka-Grenades. On everything else, it just affects starting condition, and it's just as easy to have a high repair and make two instead.

Crafting in NV is primarly for switching ammo types or recycling if you're an e-weps.

FO3 has 2 killer schematics - the dart gun and shish-ka-bob. Dart gun is absurdly useful, and SKB becomes the most damaging melee weapon in the game with the pyromaniac perk.
