Seconded. Your roommate needs to be slapped around if he let the cat out by accident. I hope he's OK. I'd also look all over the apartment to make sure he's not hiding under your bed or something. I have 3 cats and if they don't want to be found, it can be difficult to find them sometimes.

look all around and shake his treat bag or whatever. If he's not used to being outside he probably isn't very far away.

Leave food/water out. Look everywhere. He's probably very scared if he's an indoor kitty. Hunkered down somewhere.

Hope you find him. Once my kitten escaped, and I chased him down in the neighbors yard. I saw him dart out though (mom decided to lock him in the garage when she went out, so when I opened the garage to pull the car in, the kitten darted) so I had an advantage.
