And a fraction of $80,000,000 is...

How would you propose that a typical American family contacts whatever foreign criminal organizations you believe are capable of secretly selling the most recognizable set of stolen coins on the planet?

And then how do you think it will go at that meeting?

Yeah, given the rarity of these coins and the fact that a skilled numismatist would presumably know they were stolen, I don't think it's likely the family would have been able to get more than the spot price for the gold in them (i.e., several thousand dollars, not tens of millions).

and who would buy them anyway? The are pretty worthless on the market.

That basically makes them comparatively worthless.

You went from $7.5M per coin to their bullion value, ~$1,600 per coin.

Not even that. he said a company that gives "cash for gold' so more like $40 per coin.

From the original article:

The government has long believed that Switt schemed with a corrupt cashier at the Mint to swipe the coins. They note that the deposit box in which the coins were found was rented six years after Switt's death, and that the family never paid inheritance tax on the coins.

Looks like the family was trying to pull a fast one all along.

From the last article:

The family said in its suit that in another seizure of the 1933 double eagle, the government split the proceeds with the owner after the coin sold for $7.59 million in 2002, according to Coinbooks.org.

My guess is that they knew there was no way to sell them, but thought they might receive a "reward".

I dunno, the government seems to be pretty in the right here.

Morons failed to google before walking to the govt.

They should have transported those out of the country and sold them to foreign collectors and parked the money overseas.

My take-away was they felt they should have at least been compensated like the other person.

I don't think the family thought they had anything illegal. In fact, one judge has agreed with that.

Also to those herp-derping about just melting them down and selling them for the gold value, I hope you do realize you'd be sacrificing ten's of millions for just ten's of thousands (if that).

Those companies give less, but still in the neighborhood of bullion value. Who would take $40 per coin when even a pawn shop would give you close to the spot price of gold?

Sadly, there seems to be a big market among the wealthy for stolen art and goods.

The looting of the museums in the Iraq invasion sent thousands of things to them.

Regardless as for whether or not it was stolen, it came to their possession. The Rules of The Schools™ have a very black and white interpretation of said situation. By legitimate law of Finders Keepers, the government does not have the right to take back that which was theirs.
