Apparently she has very mild effects of it. She is a professional actress and even attended college. She speaks some Japanese and is a public speaker. I've known a few people with Down Syndrome and it is downright sad. They are were all severely mentally handicapped with IQs near the 60s. This lady doesn't even have the "look" of someone with Down Syndrome...

She has Down Syndrome, sure...but she certainly doesn't suffer from its effects like other people. This is like someone who has an amputated foot telling a quadrapalegic to have a sense of humor about it. "Hey! We both have a hard time getting around! Laugh about it!"

She is making her point from the perspective of someone who suffers from Down Syndrome...because of that, she places herself on the same plane as all those who she mocked, and I hardly consider her a normal "Down" baby.

FWIW, I *loved* that episode, but I did think it was pretty cruel.

Eh? People with down syndrome can talk? I thought they were [for the lack of a better term] retarded and unable to communicate? Or am I thinking of Autism?
Well there's your problem Pudgy Fudge, there's no indication that you are thinking at all.

Our society is willing to make jokes and parody almost anything, from race to religion to sexual orientation... if we deliberately omit something from our parodies it shows our fear and alienation from that thing.

Family Guy's parody of down syndrome shows a willingness to accept people with DS as equals, especially since they focused their jokes on the personality and lifestyle of the DS character instead of the disabilities of that character.

Palin's response shows that she still wants to class her kid as "different" and "special" because of her focus on his disability, rather than help society recognize him as the person he is regardless of his disability.

I can't believe this many people in ATOT actually like Family Guy. Its comedy is almost as atrocious as Dane Cook's.

Did you read his post?

He not only slams Palin but pretty much the whole republican party. He acts like the democrats aren't full of retards......

Hell even Obama knows the democrats are retarded.

So to go off on a tangent like it is only the republicans are the retards is just playing partisan politics.
I never said that. In fact I don't think I will ever vote democrat again because they have completely shown that they are not capable of governing. With that said, I completely detest the anti-intelligence that republicans preach. There is very little of their actual philosophy (the philosophy they actual follow, not the one they claim, like small gov and protecting liberties) that is rational or good for this country.

Democrats might be worthless but republicans are dangerous. American politics are a lost cause. I have chosen to just hate both. And I am sick of republicans trying to pull on people's heart strings.

fail. so what do you find humorous, so we can have a reference point.

hmm...my favorite comedies are Always Sunny and The Office. And if you ever watch South Park, they do a great spoof of why Family Guy is not funny.

No way. I just honestly thought that Down Syndrome kids couldn't function in normal society.

There is a ton of variation. One thing to kind of keep as a rule: if a disease is referred to as a syndrome it usually means that it is a varying degree of common symptoms classically seen together in some combination.

There are some extremely high functioning Down's kids but there are also extremely debilitated. The average Down's kid falls closer to the debilitated. They tend to live very hard lives. The risk of having a down's kid and having a down's kid with more severe symptoms increase exponetially as the mother gets older and that is why prenatal screening is pretty much necessary for mothers over 40 and suggest for any mother. There is a huge problem with older mother also not being able to truly care for their kids either when they have these med problems.

I saw that last line referenced in a few places... but I think you're right, I don't think she said it.

Go look it the fuck up, BJ!

You and the boob you quote are both as lazy and ignorant and wrong as Palin.

The NYT just mercifully stopped their quote short of completely slamming Sarah . . . because picking on the "differently-abled" is retarded! :awe:

Oh, what the hell, here, let me help you velcro up your shoes:

meh, I don't understand the love for South Park either.

I watch a few EP's here and there and I don't hate it (ie WoW episode), but FG > SP x infinity. YMMV.

I probably would have got more out of that if I didn't already know that politicians and people in the legal field are the absolute scum of the earth. Worse than telemarketers.

So she complains that Palin is using her son for sympathy and votes.. yet she uses her down's symdrome to make a political joke against Palin, perhaps to sway sympathy and votes away from her or to another party?

I don't get it. Seems like they are doing the same thing to me. One is doing it through 'outrage' and the other through 'satire'.

I guess I'd say a person using their own handicap for personal gain is acceptable and someone using their child's handicap for person gain is not.

I despise both parties, but Macfarlane & co. always seem to attack republicans/conservatives

Have you considered the possibility that republicans/conservatives provide a lot more fodder for comedy?
