So, at the beginning of next week, my family is kind of gathering around the grandparents, who live ~1,000 miles away. My family is really spread out around the country, so we rarely have gatherings where most everyone is present.
My dilemma: In less than two weeks, I leave for New York to take part in something that's probably the biggest thing I've done so far professionally. It has the potential to have significant ramifications for my career, and I need to be prepared. The folks didn't tell me about this grandparent trip until really recently, which means it's too late to book a flight without getting raped cost-wise. In other words, I'd have about a 14 hour drive (each way) to endure, followed by a few days with the grandparents where it is impossible for me to continue my preparation for said professional event. In other words, I'd be coughing up most of a week (6 or 7 days), right before leaving for this big professional event that I NEED to be prepared for.
So, I basically have three options:
(a) blow off the grandparent trip, stay here and do my work, until it's time to go to New York.
(b) Blow off my work and preparation, and go spend the time with the family
(c) Blow off the family gathering, but at least come back through and go to the grandparents' AFTER my professional event. Of course, I wouldn't be there with the rest of the family, but at least I'd spend time with the grandparents, which is the point of the trip.
For the record, my grandparents are in decent health, but they are kind of getting on in years...my parents are really understanding and just told me to "do what I need to do," and no one will be upset.
Pollage, give me your thoughts.
