OK. Made a loaf late last night, let it sit 'til this morning. Had toast and poached eggs with the family. It's gone. Have the second loaf just finishing the last cycle now, gonna bring it up to my mom's house. Delicious. This is indeed the best bread I've ever made in a bread machine. Easy it is!

by the way ... at 11 cents a loaf, it's worth it to make it just FOR THE SMELL !!! the whole house has that fresh baked bread smell. ...............beats Glade plug-ins.

Don't you guys know carbs will kill you? Bread is so bad for you. And 11 cents? More like 15 cents with the electricty needed. Way not hot...

Just kidding, just wanted to get a RISE out of you... I thought this thread needed a little crapping since no one has chimed in about the whole low carb diet and/or some other conspiracy about how flour is contaminiated by some pesticide or some other BS.

Actually I can't wait to try it out. I have a rye bread recipe to try too! Guess I'll have to dust off the ole bread machine.

FYI, I have varied the OP recipe as follows:
For the 1 cup of whole wheat flour?I have substituted 1 cup of rye flour ?
however, it is nowhere near as good as the Jewish rye bread that comes out of Canada. The big, round loaf that you find in the deli.

But, it sure enough is the second best Rye bread around!
I call this my light-rye bread recipe.

You guys are right, I neglected to factor in the cost of the electricity.
This is no BS and is only an approximation.
My breadmaker uses $0.01113 per loaf at Denver residential prices.
But like I said, it's approximate and could go as low as $0.011 or as high as $0.0112 ? however, if you bought your flour in the 100 lb. sack size, you could easily negate this oversight on my part.

Thanks for the recipe.
2 questions :

1. this recipe is for what size loaf ? (1, 1.5, or 2 lb loaf ?)
2. can I substitute the 1 - cup Whole wheat flour with the all purpose flour ?

The ratio is 3 to 1 for a total of four (4) cups and it makes a two (2) pound loaf.
All of this info is contained in the original post (OP).
If you need to tinker with the recipe to get a one (1) pound loaf or other, you can do the math. It's pretty straightforward.

I still have and use our DAK bread machine, anybody else have something older? Mine is the II model.
My mom has one of those, makes the wierd tube shaped loaves! Man I really miss those DAK catalogs, they always had the coolest stuff in them! Too bad they went out of business.

This deal is both HOT and FAT.

We dump in the goodies the night before and set the timer to have the bread ready for breakfast in the morning.

Quite true!
Drew Kaplan (or whatever his name was) was quite the bunko artist IMHO. (Bunko, a nice way to say BS.)

Thanks, I just dug out my bread machine. Will try this tonight! Has anyone made marbled bread (like a marbled boule) in a machine? Is it possible?

I finally received my breadmaker and tried this. It does make good toast. My loaf was a little more dense/hard at the bottom than the top. Is this normal?
Next is to make an italian bread.

mine have been coming out pretty uniform (and uniformally good).

I've made over a half dozen loaves since this thread started. Don't know why.

Would my water being too hot make a difference? I noticed 90 seconds on my microwave makes the water temp almost 140 deg. F instead of the 80 recommended in the booklet.

By the time it gets in the pan and all the ingredients are in...temp is just right, IMHO.
Try it. What'll you lose? 12¢?

Its more difficult to find the bread machine pre-made mixes -- anyone know where to find them?

I never had luck with the premade mixes...the bread just didnt taste as good. That's why the bread machine was retired years ago. I still see them at stores though....maybe I'll try again. The family likes this stuff made with this recipe though.
