EC,
You are right. Only one other recipe tasted any better than the Light Wheat and it sure wasn't the pre-mixes.

While they may be convenient, they cost as much as the store bought and where is the savings in that? Additionally, as you mention (ok, implied) no pre-mix comes anywhere close to the taste or reliability of this recipe.

PS EC, I think it was a big mistake to bring a loaf of your home-made to mom...she is probably re-writing the will right now.
You know how mom's like to think their little boy dotes on their bread.

What do you pay for your flour? I can't see it only costing $0.11 . My white flour was $1/5#s and the wheat was $2.50/5#s.

My machine is going while I type this. So, if I want to make more, can you give me an idea of the prices you are getting for the correct size packages?

Thanks

25lbs. at Costco $3.50
Edited:
Just bought 25lbs. yesterday...$3.89 - I'm in shock! It's way up! :disgust:
Also, 2lbs. yeast, $2.75 - both at Costco - I'm looking at the receipt.

OK, I tried to make it last night. It was my first attempt to make bread. In short, it was a disaster because the ingredients didn't mix properly.

What I did was dump the things in the breadmaker in roughly the same order as listed in the ingredients. My bread only rose half way, and the top quarter or so was almost entirely dry flour. Do you have to mix the ingredients together before putting them in the breadmaker? Add the dry ingredients first before the water? Is 12 oz of water enough-that's only a cup and a half if I measured correctly.

Thump ... uh your breadmaker should automatically cycle a mix cycle, a knead cycle, and a rise cycle all before the bake cycle. There may be other cycles in there too, like mine has a rest cycle between different phases.

I just dump the stuff in, select regular bake, and hit start. 3 hours later a perfect loaf.

Make sure you measure the right salt and yeast.

Thank you for the recipe ridefree....and for the message in your sig also. I'm an 11 year veteran starting a little over a year before operation frequent wind vietnam. I'm guessing you are a vet also?

Thump, on bread machines it's best to put in the liquid, then everything else except the yeast. Make an indentation for the yeast so it does not get wet until the mixer actually starts. It's especially good to get in the habit of doing this if you are setting the timer, the yeast should not get wet until mixing starts.

Please change the title to make up for the runaway prices of the necessary ingredients. In addition most of us pay more for electric then you.

Might cost as much as 0.14 for some.

Thanks for the recipe.

Yes, you kill the yeast.

Slightly off topic, but someone should take a picture of this bread and put it in the OP. I am sure it would cause more people to try the recipe

I tried this the other day, and the flavor was good, but the load was a bit undercooked. nothing major, just a bit dough-y.
Any ideas what to do to solve this problem? I like a bread that is lighter (physically)!
We have a pretty good machine that is only a few years old. I forget the name right now...
Thanx, Ron

guess you'd have to have a free bread machine to get it down to .11 cents a loaf

Thanks to the OP. We made this in our trusty Breadman Ultimate (7 years old, not woot)
and of the 500+ loaves we made, this is a clear new favorite.

It turns out that I didn't insert the breadpan into our breadmaker properly-you have to twist it until the pan locks down. I made a second batch last night which came out pretty good.

Hearing this sure gladdens my heart.
I was unsure of the Breadman Ultimate's ability to make the "perfect loaf" like other models do. Good to know this, as I just got the Ultimate for my daughter for Christmas.
Of course, I'm also glad that you have a new "favorite" toy this Christmas.

The reason I mention the ability to make the "perfect loaf" is that I have installed this recipe into the homes of many relatives and not every breadmaker encountered had the ability to produce excellent results. Some models couldn't even produce a mediocre loaf from this recipe. Obviously, defective breadmaker engineering.

Or have a relative in the flour mill, or Great West Sugar...

I'm surprised no one has used the old cliche "I need to pinch a loaf"

Anyhow, I'm gonna dig up the old bread machine and give this recipe a try.

Hey OP, I just wanted to say thanks! You're recipe sounds awesome and your bread looks delicious in the pics! I don't have a breadmaker yet, but when I do, I'll definately give it a try, and from all the feedback of other users, I"m sure its gonna be might tasty. And if any one asks about it, I'll tell 'em it's RideFree's special recipe...then when I tell them that this was from a computer forum everyone will be shocked, haha.

Mine is an Oster. Breadman Ultimate has been given a
Look for the cheapest 2lb. loaf capable machine you can find & run it by this thread. Someone is sure to have the knowledge as to whether it is any good, or not.

PS I just checked fleaBay and (while I don't necessarily recommend fleaBay) saw prices all over the map...some claimed "only used one time"! Obviously they did not have my recipe.

I think I'm going to have to play with the recipe some, my bread turned out really salty (used a teaspoon and a half using measuring spoons) and the loaf didn't rise much. Was only about half of a 2 lb pan and crumbly when cutting.

That was the second try, the first the yeast wasn't refrigerated was old and id did not rise at all. Had a brick. The second was with fresh yeast.
