They are extremely lightweight and the quality rivals low-end
Sennheiser and Grado headphones that cost $80.

I've had mine since the very first commercial portable MP3 player

ksc50 and ksc55 suck a lot more compared to the ksc35, because of their heavy design, and weaker drivers.

Also - how do these compare to the PortaPro's? I picked up a pair of PortaPros when they were on sale for $30 a couple of months back. I read then that the PortaPros were the best headphones under $80. They both can't be the best can they?

I recall reading on head-fi.org that the porta pros (which i own) use the same drivers as the KSC35. The difference in perceived sound quality has to do with the different enclosure of the porta pros and the way the porta pro's headband keeps the drivers closer to your ears. Basically the consensus seemed to be that the porta pros provide more bass than the KSC35s. Some people seem to prefer the sound of the KSC35s because they have less bass and give a more "natural" sound. If you already own the porta pros, don't bother with the KSC35s. You can read the thread on head-fi.org (search for porta pro and ksc35). On another note, none of the portable Koss headphones (which do sound great) can match the quality of the Grado SR80s I have, but they are the best cheap portable headphones you can buy. If you've been using sony walkman headphones be prepared to be blow away.

someone sell me on this. really, compact headphones for $30? How much headphone do you need for compact headphones, when your probably going to use them on the road or gym or something. Wouldnt you just want some cheap beaters. Why would someone drop $30, much less $80 or $100 on compact headphones? I could see if for home private use maybe, but in this application.... Im just missing something i guess. That an im a cheap bastid. Then again, ive just got my rio setup recently, and i hate those damn earbuds, so if these are the bomb, ill maybe drop the coin.

Man...all I used before the PortaPros were cheapie <$20 headphones that came with whatever portable audio unit I bought and I can attest that the PortaPros blow them AWAY. I'm talking a HUGE difference. The bass on the PortaPros is incredible, but just the overall quality of sound is many many times better than cheapie stuff. It's like listening to JBL speakers vs. some cheap KLH speakers.

And the biggest reason to go with these Koss portable headphones is that they offer a lifetime warranty on them. Many many people will tell you that this is for real, no joke. If your Koss headphones break, contact them, send the broken ones back, and pay $6 for shipping and get a new pair or get them repaired.

From their website: "This Koss product has a Lifetime Limited Warranty which covers normal use by the initial user or purchaser of this particular Koss product. Koss hereby warrants only to the initial user or purchaser that this Koss product will be free of any defect in materials and workmanship for the life of the product."

Hm... some people just like to take the best they can out to portable with them. I mean.. they are headphones.. supposed to be portable. I even take my Sennheiser HD580's ($200 new, got em for $150) out a lot.

<-- has spent about $500 on headphones... not including a $450 ipod

Edit: You do have a point about the running around and working out in a gym. However, people do take their portable audio systems with them on busses, into libraries, in class (like me), and just for walking around campus (like me)

Actually, the KSC50 and KSC55 use the same exact drivers as the KSC35. The difference is in the housing.

If the PortaPros (which I just bought and love) are so close in SQ to the coveted KSC35's, why then are the KSC35's selling for so much on ebay? Why don't those same people bidding close to $100 for the KSC35's just pick up a pair of PortaPros for $50 (or $25 if they got in on the deal last month)? I'm assuming that they know a little about KOSS headphones if they are willing to drop this much cash on these cans. Is it some kind of nostalgia thing? I'm only asking because spent close to 3 months looking for a pair of the KSC35's on the recommendation of a audiophile friend of mine and then ended up grabbing the PortaPros when they went on sale.

echo: yes, the ksc35 are selling for that price partly due to the nostalgia. they WERE selling more than the portapro (which are better sounding) because they werent in production

smackattack: i used a pair of earbuds for on-the-go previously, and bought the porta pro just because they had the 50% sale on it... ive been listening on it since. yesterday i tried the earbuds again just for shizzandgiggles and man did they BLOW!!!! i do not regret buying the Koss 1 bit. they are incredible

Because the KSC-35's had been discontinued from KOSS. Then KOSS released the KSC-50's to replace
the old KSC-35's but the new KSC-50's didn't feel and sound like the KSC-35's. People were willing to
bid on discontinued earphones that have uncomparable sound
(supposedly better than the Porta Pros.)

I have to agree that Koss makes some good headphones for the price. When I was looking for clip on style, there was a lot of press about the sound of the KSC 35 but they were discontinued at the time. I picked up the KSC 50 when they were on clearance at CC a while back and they sound great. I heard that the 35's fit better on your ear so less sound bleeding. This will be great for the other people on the train. I had to jump on these and got a confirmation email already.
