You realize that "de" and "da" are variations on the Latin root "de" meaning from, right? It was used rather frequently in the middle ages and Renaissance to identify people as coming from a particular town (hence why both your examples are from that time period)... You see a similar trend in the Germanic languages with "von" or "van," though these are more often reserved for nobility.
