Fan Duct back in or not?

Like so many of those prefab boxes, this one has a fan duct that sits over the CPU cooler and guides the air to the case fan. This way the case fan does little for the rest of the case.

I can feel the warmth of the graphics card when my hand is near. I can feel the warmth of the HDDs when I touch them. Originally it had one HDD, but I added one.

Is it perhaps a good idea to leave the fan duct out and have the case fan work like a case fan instead of aiding the CPU-fan?

With the case closed monitor you temps with and without the duct. Use MBM or speed fan, I also like PC Wizard. What are the details of your system? CPU, ram, vid card, PSU? are you OCing?, What configuration is your case and the fans? size?, in or out? pic maybe? Details, details, can't give an educated answer without them.

HP + OCing? hax!

the case is probably one of those ATX cases with only an exhaust fan on the rear (probably 92 mm?), hard drive mounted vertically in the front of the case to save space...if you've worked with HPs enough, you'll know those things don't have sh!t for airflow and the PSU probably has an 80mm fan.

the question is, do the hard drives have a fan near them to blow air onto them? what kind of video card do you have?

Who's to say un less ceefka tells us? This is a Toshiba PIII from people pc. I bought it in '98 and when that pic was taken it had a little more under the hood than when it was purchased.

not sure if that link works.

ROFLROFL... that is nowhere near stock.

Just make another hole on the side and stick another fan and you should be fine.

Thanks for chiming in.

It's a HP Pavilion 730 with
AMD 1600+
NVIDIA GeForce2 MXTM-200 32MB
Asus VIA KT 266
2 HDDs mounted horizontally in a casing on the middle of the front with the 2 optical drives above, no fans there.
1 Samsung Spinpoint 40GB 5400rpm 2MB (really slow drive)
1 WD 10GB 5400 rpm 2MB (contains an image of the OS) also very slow
256MB PC2100 RAM (I know, that ain't much)
two optical drives 1 DVD ROM player, one CD writer.
80mm case fan on the back
60 mm CPU fan
XP SP2
No OCing. Just a simple mail and surf box.

I am planning to add another 512MB of RAM, maybe even a new PATA HDD. A faster CPU if I can find one. That will speed it up a bit.

aigmorla, this PC is very stock except for the 10GB WD drive. This PC belongs to my in laws. It was in a terrible state due to virusses, soundcard not working, tons of obsolete applications installed, fragmented drive. To make their new broadband connection an enjoyable experience I thought it was a nice idea to see if I can make this old PC a little better. I had it here for a couple of days, but now it's back in their home.

I secured their data and did a full system recovery, surfed to Microsoft for updates a couple of times until all 80 or so updates were installed, put on Avast antivirus software and wrote an image of that to the 10GB drive with Norton. If anything goes wrong, I don't have to go back to zero again (XP before SP1).

Anyway, back to the fan duct. It is out now and it doesn't seem to matter much. There seem to be however no air intakes on the front or anywhere else for that matter.

I agree, use a large fan, Silenx 120mm would be the best as it is very low noise. Mod to 7v and the outlaws will love you for it. If your willing to blow it out monthly I wouldn't bother with the fan. That system was "engineered" with temps in mind, adding a 2nd hd should not burst the temps bubble.

aigo- thanks, that was my 1st build, pent 820D @3.2 ghz, retired for now, I'm using that memory in my 6600 so it is waitng for my kid to buy memory or me to upgrade.

wasnt refering to the non stock statement at you. Anyhow just follow my original post on my recomendation. Its far better to cut a new side blow hole then it is to duct air to the rear.

Just get a dremel and start cutting. If you dont have a dremel, goto radioshack, and buy something called the nibbler. U can then mod the side pannel for a new blow hole. If your moding skills arent great, you can always go pick up a fan filter and stamp it to cover the uneven cut.

Fan cover I*PC SIDE PANNEL*I Fan <--- like that. Then you dont have to worry about uneven nibble cuts.

Bling bling Fan Covers/filters can be found at performance-pcs.com They work as both filtering nasty dust, and also covering up bad mod jobs.

A rad grill is also acceptable to cover up uneven cuts, but there about the same in price as an alumnium fan filter. And those are much more sexy/efficent.

They come in different annodized colors to match your comp also. Unless u have like a limited edition hillary duff pink one. j/p

Silent X's are overpriced hype. They are as bad as Thermaltake on their noise ratings. Yate Loon, Nexus, and if really rich, Noctuas, are MUCH better.

I don't know about Noctuas as I havent tried them or researched them but you can afford them Silenx moves more air at the same or lower sound levels than Yate Loon and Nexus.

Seems according to that place that Silent Xs are nothing more than rebadged Adda fans.

I followed your link and they were very interesting. Honestly I am not equiped to tell you if the cfm claims of any fan maker are legit or not, what I can tell you without question is that I have used nexus, yate loon and silenx and found the best to be silenx judging from my temps, rpm and my ears.
btw I agree 100%,,, thermaltake water is a joke

ahhh thank you thecoolnessrune

i didnt know they were that bad. I figured the price and performance quote was close to pappists, they should perform on par with them.

Yes nocutuna's are seriously expensive. I want to get my hands on them to test them out, but i cant quite see the reason to fit a 19.99/fan budget. I would need about 6 of them on my QX and 5 on my MC.

Yikes thats 11 fans at 20 dollars for 220 dollars in FANS. I cant seem to fit that budget in ANY of my cases.

Hehe, i'll stick with my 2.90 yates on bulk discount over at jab-tech.com. So far i cant seem to find any fan that comes within price/performance/noise ratio yates give. And if i want to go bling bling, i think i would use the AF12A. They look cool, push a lot of air, and there light and small, for a 120mm fan. A bit more expensive then yates, but half the price of a noctuna.

Heh.. dampel, on your site it says your sponsored by noctuna, could you do a bulk discount order from them, and then sell them as samples on this fourm? i would love to pick some up to test, provided they werent 19.99. Maybe if i tried them and found they were useful, i might concider the budget, but as of now, NO WAY... 220 on fans, is just too expensive IMO.
