you will not be able to mount a filter onto the fan holder unless you modify it somehow. fan filters attach like this, and the fan holder blocks the screw holes where the fan filter would need to attach to. so you can try buying a bigger filter and drill extra holes in your case to accomodate the new bigger filter.

I would not put any kind of filter over any of your exhaust fans. A fan grille is not a bad idea but (IMHO) not a filter. Im not sure how much air would be blocked by a filter.

Second that no filter on exhaust comment.

Also, most of the plastic fan holders are designed for ease of assembly rather than airflow. Often they actually block airflow more than anything else. You might be better off just removing the holder, and cutting out the metal, then drilling bolt holes to attach the fan and filter.

As for filters, the foam ones filter smaller particles, but do not flow as well (or last as long) as the metal mesh ones.

Anyone know of any common things that would work well for a homemade filter, preferably something cheap? One thing I've heard is used dryer sheets but I'm looking for something more porous for better airflow.

Ive heard the dryer sheets thing, how bout a bit of window screen? It would catch some of the dust and still let air flow through.

I would like to put a filter on the front intakes to stop some dust from coming in my case. So I want to know how much air would be blocked if I use a filter on the front. As for the fan holders, their built surprisingly well that they barely block any of the airflow.

I noticed a good decrease in the airflow when I had fans on my 80mm in my old Enlight case. I wound up taking the filters off and just cleaning my case every six months or so. I was using the aluminum/metal mesh type if filter.

i've used airconditioner filters on my fans before. It's a really thin 1/4" or so porous foam that comes in 3' sheets for about $2 at the local hardware store. I had to special mod the mounting for it, but it worked really well and didn't restrict flow too much. Now due to the quest for lower temps, I run filterless and have to blow out my case every 10 days or so

Panty hose would work quite well; it's porus & would filter air quite well, thanks for the heads-up
