Fan on the alpha heatsink-blow, or suck?

Got a PAL6035 heatsink without a fan(I got my own delta), now Im trying to figure out if the fan should blow on the heatsink or suck. I remember reading somewhere that on the alpha heatsinks they are supposed to suck. Thought I would ask you guys though.

I've got the Sanyos on my Alpha P3125 sucking off of the HS. Any analysis I read in my research before buying suggested that sucking off of the HS made only a 1 or 2 degree celsius difference. For some folks I reckon that's significant.

I hope you use hearing protection with that Delta. Used to have a couple of Deltas on mine and thought I was gonna' have to be institutionalized after about a week. Drove me crazy.

Yea ive had 2 diff aplhas and they are meant to suck the heat off the chip not blow onto it.

I agree to have it "suck" the warm air off the heatsink rather than blow it upon it... I have a simple setup that works very well for a few less degrees... I have a piece of duct from a bathroom fan (commonly known as a "fart fan&quot that is about 15" long and is clamped to the fan (an Alpha also but only a 6K rpm model) with a 3/8" cable tie then run to another 60mm fan mounted on the side panel of my case (Enlight 7237) where I had drilled a hole 2.5" in dia. and have both fans pulling all the warm air off the heatsink and exhausting it out the side... (side mounted fan is plugged into a fan header on the board with about 16" of lead). I have both my front intake fan`s (2 80mm fans inline) and my rear 80mm fan all pulling air in to the case except for the power supply fan that is in the exhaust mode... This setup keeps positive pressure in the case but keeps a ample supply of cool air being fed to heatsink while the warm air is expelled out the side and PS... It was worth about 7-9 degrees F... (a drop that is...)

I've got one too. I tried it both ways and I found that it worked better sucking instead of blowing.

The instructions says Im supposed to attach the pads on the bottom of the heatsink, but do I need to do that if my cpu already has the pads attached to it?

The pads for the Alpha only need to be used if mounting it on a Intel PIII or Celeron type flip chip. DO NOT use them on a AMD socket A chip.

I have experimented with the fan sucking and blowing a few times, and I for some reason found it better in my situation to blow onto the heatsink. That was a long time ago in an old case that was poorly cooled. I havent tried it yet in my new sx1030b. Ill retest next time I am working on my computer.

After running my own experiments i wound up agreeing with all the articles...its definitely suck. I got like a 3-4 degree drop with sucking.

Muadib, Not that bad... I have a Delta (6K rpm model does not whine like the 7K ones...) But you could use the YStech quiet fans and make it even less... Another "good thing" is the exhaust from the side is directed at my monitor which also cools it... With good filters the dust is to a minimum...
