looking to add one to my system to quite things down when the computers idling and at night. I've jumped over to watercooling thanks to Frys and the Danger Den kit on closeout and its helped. My biggest need is something that can monitor and adjust fan speeds/temps regardless of what the computer does, and must have a display that can be turned off. Any recommendations? Cheaper is always better! Ideally GPU fan control is available until I watercool this thing (the 4890 has a fan that sounds like a leaf blower at 100%!)

Any way to add the PS fan to the mix? I want this thing QUITE, it sits in the bedroom and it doesnt take much noise to keep me awake

change fan speeds via BIOS or use SpeedFan for fans connected to the motherboard. you'll need to go to Configure > Advanced > Chip associated with fans > changing PWM modes to software controlled.

google on how to get SpeedFan to save fan speed settings.

ATI Tray Tools for GPU fan. can setup a profile to change fan speeds depending on temperature.

no idea for PSU fan

I use speedfan but if my computer goes into standby mode all of my fans return to max settings, which I'm not a fan of. There is also no GPU control, and both Catalyst Control Center and the Nvidia control panels auto fan settings are all but useless. I'm really looking for more of a hardware based control setup, and worst case it doesnt work like I want and off it goes.

I generally do turn the computer off at night, but with large downloads I will leave it on overnight so it can DL during downtime. A lot of it stems from not wanting to have to manually change the fan settings depending on what I'm doing. I want something that will do it automatically when the temps rise.

I dunno, didn't seem like that strange of a request...

I remember once buying this "pyramid" thing that did exactly what you want. It has a sensor in it and it speeds the fans up based on the temp. I can't recall what it was called though. This is it here:

Not sure if you'd be able to still buy those or not. A more expensive option is an AC thermostat but it's kinda bulky to be wiring that up in a PC.

I picked up an NZXT Sentry 2 earlier this week. Seemed to work well, system is apart while I mount the heat sensors and redoing the water loop. I'll see how it works out.

I take it there is not an auto fans speed control in the ati control panel? Do your cards run that hot to where you need them at 100%?

Maybe just find a good cheap controller that you can find a happy medium with. off the top of my head, I have not seen a controller for PWM fans, as that would defeat the purpose. maybe some sensors so the fans turn up to full speed at a higher temp. or change the settings for you fan headers on your mobo, or like someone posted about running multiple fans on the cpu header; although most mobos will allow you to control the fans from the bios or software that would fit your needs
