I took apart my old mobo/CPU setup that my friend had built for me since I recently braved the world of DIY computer building. The board was a Baby AT Matsonic and had several small problems. I found that a jumper on the board was set for Slot 1 instead of Socket 370, which is what's on the board (Celeron 500MHz). Other than that everything seemed ok... put it back together tried to get it to post.
It wouldn't post and beeped a single beep at each power up. The CPU fan wouldn't spin either. I did a little reading online and found that AT power supplies (this case has a 250W AT) require something of a load to work right-- IF I interpreted what I read correctly.
So I hooked up a hard drive, but before I did noticed that the RAM didn't seem seated totally (I had been gentle putting it in b/c the plastic standoffs for the mobo weren't the best). This made sense to as why I got the single beep, althought the mobo manual didn't give references for error beeps so I wasn't sure.
I powered up... board posted...CPU fan spins up. I then unplugged the hard drive and powered up again. CPU fan spins again and board posted ok again.
Could it be that since the DIMM wasn't seated that the fan wouldn't spin? That seems strange to me.
Also...do you think any of the problems I had with this PC were related to that jumper being set to Slot 1? When I get the money to get some more components I'm going to build a second system with the old case, mobo, CPU and want to make sure it's stable.
Sorry this is so long.
